Let's say last Friday it was revealed that a Rethug Governor/Senator/Congressmen thirty five years ago was pictured in his college yearbook wearing blackface posing with a classmate in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood.
Said rethug Governor/Senator/Congressman apologizes for having been in the picture and was deeply sorry, only to counter the very next day that it was not him in the photo, while admitting to wearing blackface to appear like Michael Jackson and that his nickname in college was "coonman"
Now, how would you react to the above overtly racist act?
A) Demand forcefully that they resign immediately?
B) Protest outside his or her office to demand that they resign?
C) Begin circulating either or both an in person or online petition with signatures that said rethug Governor/Senator/Congressman resign?
If you answered yes to any or all of the above questions, it's crystal clear that Northam resign immediately! He is already causing irreparable harm to the Democratic Party and will continue to do so the longer he stays.
I don't want to hear about ratfcking nor apologists making excuses because "he's one of our own". No, he is NOT!

(15,951 posts)which is why Gov. Northam should also resign. It's clear he can't act as an effective governor.

(10,023 posts)Potentially leaving control of the state to the opposing Democratic party.
Even I, as a Democrat, would be suspect of the timing.
And Yes, Northam's behavior was racist. And yes, I was in the resignation crowd.

(10,023 posts)My first post when I heard about the yearbook picture and it had been confirmed to be real was for Northam to resign. The picture might have been able to have been explained, but it was never defendable.
I am now conflicted on his resignation. If Northam can govern for one term, and Fairfax can counter the accusations against himself, the GOP in Virginia would be denied a (possibly self engineered) power grab.
Northam's political career after this term of governorship will be over regardless.

(14,249 posts)he will be exhibit A for Democratic hypocrisy whenever any of us try to call out Trump and GOP racism.
Not to mention he is a walking talking breathing affront to the black people of his state and if he stays in office, they are being told they don't matter, that their concerns must be subordinated to some amorphous political expediency. Not only is that morally reprehensible, it is politically stupid. Good luck getting them to go out to vote (much less work to turn out the vote) this fall and next year.
He needs to go. Now.

(17,569 posts)That is my point. It now looks like someone might have coordinated taking out both the Democratic governor and Democratic Lieutenant Governor of Virginia by the timing of the yearbook photo and reaccusation of assault.
I am a Progressive/Democrat/Liberal, but if I saw the same thing happen to a Republican Governor and his Republican Lieutenant Governor, I would want to be sure it wasn't political foul play by our side.
(And yes, I have also heard the possibility Northam is responsible for the Fairfax reaccusation timing because he thinks it might save him from needing to resign.)
This is a mess.

(1,279 posts)What has he done since? I don't need an apologee for what he did then. Has he shown since then to be a racist or has he shown that that he is a decent person? The former, he should resign. The latter, drop it.
