granted, I'm not a fan of the ways some members of my generation X have suddenly become conservative. Believe me, when I see someone who is a Gen X say crap like "Republican is the new punk" I can actively wish for worse than death upon that person. Thankfully I am too proud to stoop to that level.

However, as far as the 70s and 60s set, part of me wants to ask this: how did you come from being flower children did being active supporters of Trump? It is one thing to perhaps be warm to a John McCain, a John Kasich, a Mitt Romney, or any of the people who at least pretend that they are doing this for the ideas instead of "making liberals cry."

The truth is, the sort of person you described in this OP is the sort of person who has benefited from social programs that were put in by the very people that Trump hates. These are the same people I see in Walgreens who give me a dirty look when I use my Medicare to get the medicine I literally need to live, but they turn out to be in the same line, using their Medicare. As far as a more affluent ones, they are the ones who will actively go ahead and seek immigrant labor to maintain their house, and then say build the wall! it is not just that they are arrogant or malicious, is that they will be among the very first to demand the very life that they take from our hands.

I used to have patriotic feelings when I was younger. One of my favorite sayings was from the president I help the left, William Jefferson Clinton. He would say that there is" nothing wrong with America that cannot be fixed by that which is right with America." I have to confess I don't really believe that as much anymore, and if it wasn't for the fact that the only alternatives that are rising are folks like Russia, China, or the fundamentalist Islamic bloc, I would not have that much pity for America going the way of the person you described.
