Another probe that could hamstring the president and his lawyers is widening.
Prosecutors in New Yorks Southern District have reached out to President Donald Trumps inauguration committee and plan to subpoena the organization for documents, sources with direct knowledge tell ABC News, indicating that even as the special counsel probe appears to be nearing an end, another investigation that could hamstring the president and his lawyers is widening.
The contact from the Southern District, which came from its public corruption section, is the latest activity focusing on Trumps political fundraising both before and immediately after his 2016 election. Lawyers for the inauguration committee were contacted midday Monday and asked if they could accept a subpoena for documents from federal prosecutors, according to sources familiar.
The details of the request remain unclear.
Trumps former personal attorney Michael Cohen has been extensively interviewed by prosecutors in the Southern District office. Longtime family accountant and Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg has agreed to cooperate, though the extent of his help is unknown.

(42,564 posts)Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, a New York society events planner, also serves as a senior advisor to the first lady, although she is not paid for her White House work. The inaugural committee reported paying $26 million to WIS Media Partners, a limited liability company that Wolkoff set up in late 2016.
Event planners typically pay most of their fees to subcontractors such as florists, caterers and venues. A committee source told The New York Times that Wolkoff's share of her $26 million fee was $1.62 million.

I've wondered if a large chunk of that is being held for Melania as her fee for postponing the divorce for four years.

Bet she hopes the hubbie will croak before she has to execute her plan.
Although, I dont know what the prenup has in it. She might make out better the $25 million.

(282 posts)"Rick Gates, the former deputy chair of President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and a member of Trump's inauguration planning committee, testified Tuesday in the criminal trial of his former boss Paul Manafort that it was "possible" Gates stole money from the inauguration.
The revelation of that potential theft Gates was asked if he had submitted personal expenses for reimbursement to the inauguration committee; he said it was "possible" came as Gates was questioned Tuesday by Manafort's attorney. It was one of a series of crimes that Gates confessed to this week or said he may have committed."

"There are twin scoops today that suggest a new direction in the Mueller investigation. The AP broke the report that Muellers team interviewed Tom Barrack who on top of being an actual billionaire (unlike Trump), one of his closest friends, and the guy who recommended he hire Paul Manafort, was his Inauguration Committee Chair in December.
One of the people who spoke to AP said the questioning focused entirely on two officials from Trumps campaign who have been indicted by Mueller: Trumps former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, and Manaforts onetime deputy, Rick Gates. Gates agreed to plead guilty to federal conspiracy and false-statement charges in February and began cooperating with investigators.
A second person with knowledge of the Barrack interview said the questioning was broader, including financial matters about the campaign, the transition and Trumps inauguration in January 2017.
Rick Gates, who served as Deputy Chair of the inauguration, flipped in late February.
In early April, the press reported that multiple oligarchs were being questioned about inauguration donations by Mueller.
Investigators are asking whether wealthy Russians illegally funneled cash donations directly or indirectly into Donald Trumps presidential campaign and inauguration.
Yesterday, NYT confirmed that the oligarch stopped in NY was Viktor Vekselberg. In addition to the inauguration, Vekselberg attended the RT dinner attended by Mike Flynn, and ran a corrupt Cypriot bank with Wilbur Ross."
