I grew up in Ottumwa, Iowa. Worked at the meat packing plant. Went to community college then U of Iowa. I'm an recovering alcoholic. Been to 1000 parties. Arrested 7 times including nudity at an old folks home & I've never even seen someone in blackface. Virginia is for weirdos.

I'd imagine he implied he'd never seen it in person, much as I have never despite having grown up in the south. However, if it validates your own narrative to believe a literal meanings only, more power to ya.

I went to grad school in Georgia during the mid-1980s. I saw it there, too. And, for those who say that blackface wasn't common or acceptable at the time, look up the movie "Soul Man." In came out in 1986.
