You dont threaten to publish naughty pictures of the worlds richest man unless youre worried hes got even nastier stuff on you.By JACK SHAFER February 08, 2019
No, the most flabbergasting fact is that the Enquirer gang thinks Bezos is being mean to them! The tabloid and its executives want Bezos and his investigator, Gavin de Becker, who told the Daily Beast that political motives might be behind the Enquirer exposé, to stop soiling their reputations!
The notion that the Enquirers reputation could be damaged doesnt go down easily, no matter how big a whiskey chaser you take with it. But thats the position of Enquirer attorney Jon Fine takes in his letter to Bezos attorney. He claims Bezos and de Becker have defamed the Enquirers parent company, American Media, by expressing their views that the Enquirers January exposé of Bezos love affair was politically motivated. To the contrary, writes Fine, "Simply put, this was and is a news story."

(14,998 posts)because Trump was mad about them making a cooperation deal in the wake of the Cohen/McDougall matter.
Why is Pecker/National Enquirer/AMI so worried about not being in Trump's good books they would pick a fight with the richest guy in the world (who aside from his wealth is kind of boring/uninteresting to their audience/not really much of a celebrity)? What does Trump have on them? What does *someone else* have on them, someone who can be kissed up to by placating Trump?
The other weird bit is that Trump never misses an opportunity to dance on peoples' graves, and he hasn't gleefully tweeted any insults about Bezos in the wake of the initial Enquirer story. That's out of character for him.

(34,661 posts)Many have suspected the Tabloid Industry of doing a Black Mail Threat for profit for decades. Do remember stories about these sleaze-balls winning cases by hiding behind First Amendment New Shield laws.
Hearst Newspapers kind of set the rules as to Shield Protection during it's reign of yellow journalistic era. And the Tabloids have now taken it to a new level thinking they had cover from a certain Political Party.
