Bruno Ganz, who played Hitler in Downfall, dies aged 77

https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-47264709

Bruno Ganz, who played Hitler in the 2004 film Downfall, has died aged 77.

The Swiss actor died at home in Zurich on Friday night, his management said.

Ganz was well-known in German-language cinema and theatre and also had roles in English-language films including The Reader and The Manchurian Candidate.

His most famous role, however, was as Adolf Hitler in Downfall. One particular scene depicting Hitler in apoplectic fury became a meme and spawned thousands of parodies online.

<snip>

At the time of his death, Ganz was the holder of the Iffland-Ring, an accolade to the German-speaking actor judged "most significant and worthy".

The ring is passed from person to person, and it is not yet clear who Ganz had intended it to transfer to on the occasion of his death.

</snip>

Cross gently, Mr Ganz! And thank you for the clip that launched a thousand memes...

On edit, here is the original scene (extended) with original subtitles:

I saw the original movie and it was a great performance - and it became famous all over again with those parodies that are still being created on the internets!

Ganz was also great in The Manchurian Candidate (the remake, which was a mediocre movie, but he was great in it).

Lets see --

Trump: " Flynn, Pence, Sessions, Bannon, Ryan, Priebus ----- TRAITORS! INCOMPETENT TRAITORS!. I shouldn't have hired them. I didn't even need to hire them.

I could have done it all by myself."

A role that can be both a heavy load to carry and hold the risk of being a career shifter in terms of typecasting or identification

Well, Hitler was, biologically, a human being. Ganz' performance painted a picture of a crazed monster with very human emotions, hate and rage being the dominant ones.

If anything, that's what made his performance so compelling.

The best actors stand out in their roles, even in average movies. I really liked him in UNKNOWN, for example.

The first time I saw him was in a film called "Messer im Kopf (knife in the head)." It was about a guy on the fringes of the protest scene in the late seventies or early eighties who was shot in the head by the German police under dubious circumstances. He sort of recovered, and the cops still hounded him for a while until they got bored, and then decided to ignore him.

He could do almost any accent and be convincing. I heard a snip of an interview with him today when he was peaking in his normal voice, and heard his Zürich accent, which wasn't even hinted at in any of the roles I saw him play. His imitation of Hitler's western Austrian accent in "Der Untergang" must have been the result of studying a number of Hitler's speeches, since he nailed that accent, too. He was one of the most gifted German-language actors of recent times.
