DES MOINES--President Obama's top re-election advisors Jim Messina and David Axelrod belittled Mitt Romney's 8-vote Iowa caucus win in a conference call Wednesday morning.
Axelrod, Obama's chief strategist, taunted Romney's vote totals noting it was little better than he did when he ran for president the first time four years ago. Romney in Iowa did not grow his base, leading Axelrod to say, "He's still the 25 percent man."
"Had he won a resounding victory...transcended what he had done before, I think you could have argued persuasively that he was bringing that party together and that he was in a position to close this out. I don't' think that happened last night...it is very possible that this race will go on for awhile," Axelrod said.

"...Taking two positions on every issue, one more on the left and one more on the far right doesn't make you a centrist, it makes you a charlatan."
Messina, Obama's campaign manager, said voter surveys showed Romney scored low in all but one category: " Voters who harbored doubts about their candidate."

Tough to develop that kind of consensus. But apparently he has pulled it off.

(14,177 posts)I would say 25% in an 8 way race is pretty good. But, he has been campaigning for five years and the rest of the group look like and act like they should be committed and heavily medicated. It is an 8 way race where the competition is weak at best, maniacal at worst. All he has to do is look somewhat sane and appeal to his base... errrrrrrr never mind the base is insane.

Way to goad him into behaving like the wet hen that he regularly shows himself to be!

(8,636 posts)Expect the also-rans like Bachmann and Perry to throw their support and their delegates to Santorum. The evangelicals will never support a Mormon, even if he reaches the convention with a sizable lead.
Then there's "The Wrath of Newt!" The Newtster is pissed over the royal shafting he got with all the negative adds directed at him before the Iowa caucuses. He's already talked about teaming up with Santorum to dethrone Romney.
Of course, the big money will still be behind Mittens; but, the Republican base may not be as willing to get in line behind the party leadership as in previous years.

(8,556 posts)He's got the war chest, the establishment support, and the largest potential base of Republican supporters. There are a lot of delegate-rich states that will definitely choose him over the alternatives. Plus, the longer there's more than one anti-Romney, the better it is for him. If it does eventually get down to just Ricky and Mitt, Mitt still wins hands-down. Santorum's too out there to win a majority of delegates.
