(51,636 posts)They showed it on CNN since he is still deciding whether to run or not. Biden was well received in Germany and has a lot of support there. Pence isn't popular there either.

"Biden tells the Munich Security Conference that the America he sees "stands up to the aggression of dictators and against strongmen who rule by coercion, corruption and violence."
"He says his country "values basic human decency, not snatching children from their parents or turning our backs on refugees at our border. Americans know that's not right."

(101,384 posts)He was introduced by an almost gushing Nicholas Burns - the former senior US diplomat (and no supporter of Mr Trump) - who mused (to rapturous applause) on how nice it would be if the US had a leader who, "rather than embracing Kim Jong-un or Victor Orban would have embraced our true friend Angela Merkel".
...
In a blunt reference to President Trump, he said: "Leadership in the absence of people who are with you is not leadership." He spoke of a "struggle for America's soul".

There are, if you like, two Americas here in Munich represented by the current and former vice-presidents. The Europeans are nostalgic for one and remain deeply uncomfortable with the other.

(51,636 posts)Pence should leave with his tail between his legs. He represents what real Americans don't...nationalism and murderous dictators. He never should be considered a patriot but is supporting and enabling a traitor. His ties are mixed up with Russia too. Europeans know this and are more aware of it than many Americans.

The German news service Deutsche Welle has revealed that the State Department downgraded the diplomatic status of the European Unions delegation to the United States at some point in the second half of 2018, without actually informing the European Union. The E.U. delegation in Washington had previously been recognized as the equivalent to a national embassy. The head of the delegation was listed as an ambassador by the Office of the Chief of Protocol. Now, the State Departments list of the diplomatic order of precedence lists the European Union under heads of delegation, along with the head of delegation of the African Union ...
The downgrade and the lack of courtesy shown by not informing the European Union in advance fits well with the Trump administrations hostility to the E.U. as a multilateral institution. Just last month in Brussels, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo lambasted the European Union (and other institutions such as the United Nations and the African Union) ...
The 2009 Lisbon Treaty created a new European Union diplomatic service, the European External Action Service, headed up by a high representative for foreign affairs and security policy. In the treaty, the member states also granted legal personality to the European Union. This means the European Union can enter into agreements with states and international organizations. Before this, only the European Community pillar of the European Union that is, the part responsible for negotiating and concluding trade agreements could enter into international agreements. With international legal personality and a new diplomatic service, the European Union comes close to demanding other states treat it as a special actor, and almost as an equal ...
