"The 2020 Democratic presidential field has been filling up with a historically diverse array of candidates, including five women, four racial minorities, a little-known white congressman and a gay mayor. Several have shown strong candidate skills.
Two prominent white males, former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke and Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, are edging toward active candidacies.
The potential candidate who has been leading most Democratic polls, former Vice President Joe Biden, has held back, and so until Tuesday, did the candidate running second, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Given their superior name recognition, they presumably don't need as much run-up time since they'll find it easier to raise funds and set up a campaign than neophyte hopefuls.
But let's face reality: Despite their current standing, both Biden and Sanders face significant barriers in winning the nomination, let alone the presidency. It might have been better for them and their party if they bypassed the 2020 race. That goes for former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, too."

(32,086 posts)He's not technically in it. I love him, and I think he'd make a great President. But, I think it's too late for him. That being said, if he enters and wins the nomination, I'd vote for him in a heart beat.

I tend to agree that Sanders and Biden not running would be best. I know some only think of Biden as lovable Uncle Joe who pals around with Obama buying burgers and ice cream, but the reasons he has never come close to being our nominee will become apparent.

(2,786 posts)but he wont. So the alternative would be for him to run as a independent which would be worse for Democrats. So Biden in the race would serve as a buffer between Sanders and any momentum he could get in the primary and I disagree with the assertion Biden should drop out even if that were not the case. White males are still the second largest single demographic in the country behind white women and our under performance with them in 2016 along with Russian interference is part of the reason Trump stole the electoral college.

(17,232 posts)then he is just being an opportunist. I will ONLY support a Democrat.

(2,786 posts)but I would rather him lose in a primary than run as a 3rd party independent in the general.

(6,916 posts)Bernie is not a Democrat because he doesn't have values in common with either party.
Last time he claimed "The Clintons have spent decades as insiders lining their own pockets and taking care of donors instead of the American people. It is now clear that the Clinton Foundation is the most corrupt enterprise in political history."

Attacking candidates for being old, male and white sounds like a great strategy to appeal to the largest voting demographic in all the swing states, older white people.

(10,174 posts)I'm in my 70s and the age related decline is quite obvious to me. That's not ageism that's the reality of getting old.

(5,528 posts)I want a candidate that has the best opportunity to be healthy, active and sharp for the next 10 years. That is two years of campaigning and two terms.
At 76+, there are actuarial probabilities that these gentlemen won't fit the criteria. There are no guarantees for someone in their 50's but the probabilities are exponentially better.
If you want to call that ageism, so be it.

(731 posts)A non-starter as a presidental nominee.
His regional strength could make him a good contender of a VP slot if Kamala Harris gets the nomination.

(2,786 posts)A state Trump absolutely has to win. Sherrod would win every state Hilary lost and might win Ohio too. Biden's name recognition will not hold up against scrutiny and once people get to know Brown they will like him.

(2,786 posts)and him being in bed with Delaware banks during his senate career, and then there is the Anita Hill thing. Which will be a huge negative in the me too era. The point is Biden has baggage and it will be exposed in a primary. That's what I meant by saying his name recognition will not hold up against scrutiny.

(8,680 posts)I dont think so. Biden and Sanders have had their chance and failed. Time for them to move on. We have more than enough good candidates.
