Don Newcombe, one of the greatest pitchers in Dodger history, has passed away at the age of 92.

The Dodgers released a statement this morning announcing Newcombe's passing. Newcombe "reached the pinnacle of his career" in 1956 after winning both the Cy Young Award and NL Most Valuable Player awards as a Dodger, the Dodgers tweeted this morning.

he won the very first one, at a time when they only awarded one, rather than one in each league.

He was the first big league pitcher I ever saw in person. Ebbets Field, Brooklyn.

RIP, Don

If I could travel back in time to watch a game, it would definitely be to see Ebbets Field. "Boys of Summer" remains one of my top ten books.

Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella were the battery, Gil Hodges, Peewee Reese, Junior Gilliam and the rest of "Dem Bums" in a 13-11 slug fest with Cincinnati on a warm fall afternoon at the bandbox with my Dad.

God, I can see it like it was yesterday.
