By ANNA PALMER, JAKE SHERMAN and DANIEL LIPPMAN 02/21/2019 06:03 AM EST Updated 02/21/2019 07:27 AM EST
DEMOCRATS are anxiously awaiting a decision by the DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE on which city will host the 2020 Democratic National Convention. So far, the committee has been mum about whether HOUSTON, MIAMI or MILWAUKEE will get the nod, but we hear part of the delay is because each city has its own downsides.
THE PAIN POINTS
MIAMI: Dealing with hot weather and potential hurricanes is a major ding on the citys bid. Plus, there is concern that the citys arena has too small of a floor plan.
HOUSTON: The big question here is money. The oil and gas industry dominates Houston, and given Democrats posture on environmental issues, it isnt necessarily a good fit for many of the citys companies to cut large checks to host Democrats. And, of course, hot weather is also an issue.
MILWAUKEE: Still seen as the odds-on favorite, the midsize city has some organizers concerned about its ability to house the influx of people during the three-day event.
DESPITE THE CONCERNS, Democrats involved in the bids believe an announcement could come as soon as next week.
A DNC SPOKESWOMAN said the DNC hasnt made any decisions yet and all cities are in the running.

(11,631 posts)If the convention gets you any points at all where its held, then Milwaukee has to be the favorite among these 3. Florida is fools gold and if we are close in Texas then we've already won. It all hinges on WI, MI, and PA in 2020... the only 3 Trump states we need.

Between the two cities you have plenty of nearby suburbs. I don't see delegates staying in Chicago unless they choose.

(7,541 posts)and the city's full of crazies. Miami's probably the best, but also the most expensive. IMO Milwaukee is probably the best choice. I know Texas has turned a bit more purple in the last decade, but I think Dems need to make a big footprint in the Midwest.

(10,491 posts)The Convention Center, baseball stadium, and Toyota Center are now all within walking distance of plenty of hotels and restaurants. The new Marriot Marquee is even bigger than the Hilton that was built for the Convention Center.
And Harris County and Ft Bend County both went blue for the first time in forever. There's real excitement here for Democrats after decades of hiding.
Also, I would like to go.

(10,491 posts)Being competitive in a Senate race can't be our crowning glory.
But 2020 is set up to be a let-down. Ted Cruz is hated in a very unique way that not even Trump can match. The Republicans will be jazzed again for a presidential race. There probably won't be another Beto drive excitement. We need something to keep momentum going.

(54,408 posts)If it has been narrowed down to these three (and I can't for the life of me understand why), then the only one that makes any sense whatsoever is Milwaukee. I've only been to one of these things since I was 8 (L.A. 1960), and that was Denver, 2008. Denver was a great choice. Unless Milwaukee has undergone a huge round of renovation, and under Walker, I can't imagine it has, I would have thought plenty of other cities would have been better choices.

(54,408 posts)Two memories I retain in detail: Groucho Marx, who I knew was famous, but not exactly why was at the poolside of some hotel my dad and I were at, and my dad told me to go up and say hi. So I did and Groucho told me to get lost. My first brush with Hollywood fame!
The other was a reception line for Hubert Humphrey, who was a family friend ever since my dad's mom has been a big fundraiser for him when he first ran for the Senate in 1948. My dad told me to tell him, "hope you get the nomination!" I did, though reluctantly, since I had no clue what a "nomination" was!

(22,976 posts)We lived in L.A., and the trip to the Sports Arena was a big deal back then. That venue was finally demolished three years ago, making way for the Banc of California Stadium, home of the MLS Los Angeles FC.
Nice of you to throw your support behind HHH! A classic, old-school pol who was a regular, upbeat guy. The world could use more like him.

(54,408 posts)When I was 15, he even sponsored me for a two week stint as a summer replacement Senate Page, so the guys who did that job year round could go home for a couple of weeks. By that time, I was 15, and knew what the hell was going on. Chatting with Bobby Kennedy in the halls of the Senate (he and my dad were friends), stuff like that. Talk about being in the middle of it!

(54,408 posts)My dad was a long-term (as in 50 years!) Washington correspondent for a one-horse town in upstate New York. He opened up shop in DC in 1950 when he was 28. As the DC scene grew, his work plus his connections from his parents led him to know LOTS of people. A cousin of his was Caroline Kennedy's tutor in the JFK White House. My brother and I had brunch with her and her husband (who is 91 and looks 71) last month in DC. He is a veteran of the Selma march and the whole 1960s civil rights campaign.
Since my dad's paper was in New York State, and he had been in DC forever, he had to know all members of the New York delegation to Congress (of both parties) as well as the governor and the Canadian Ambassador. I once played in a rock band as a teenager in DC with the son of the Canadian ambassador, and we used to rehearse in the Canadian Embassy Residence with unlimited (leftover) filet mignon and Canada Dry (of course!) soft drinks. Talk about stories! We called our band "The CLockwork Orange" three years before the film came out (we all had read the book), and got trashed for our "screwy name." Just ahead of our time, that's all! Anyway, for a couple of years, Joe II and Bobby junior were my schoolmates in DC. I freaked out Bobby Junior one time when I called in to his Ring of Fire show and said "Hi Bobby, it's been a long time."
As for Groucho, we can laugh about it now. To an 8 year old kid, it was close to devastating!

(31,261 posts)Blow driers damage hair like you won't believe. I see it regularly here in Florida with the sun and blow drying, women in their twenties and often teens have dead looking hair (actually once above the scalp surface, hair IS dead, but even that hair should have shine to it, not here in Florida unless a woman return the shine through salon appointments).
Personally, I only shampoo once per week and do a cold water rinse through on other days. Most people should do that, use a clean towel to pat dry their hair, then let it air dry, then final style it.
I can see a problem if your dad has very thick hair follicle counts, that hair takes longer to air dry. Maybe having him wear a shower cap is better.
Sorry for the aside, I just am no fan of blow drying hair.

(14,565 posts)Humidity is no problem for me. But outsiders invariably can't handle it and make related remarks.
Mid-July is not peak of hurricane season. In fact, we basically don't start thinking about hurricanes here until August nowadays, and mostly in September.
Milwaukee simply makes the most sense. Miamians won't care that the convention was here anyway. If the Democratic committees want to shore up Florida they need to prioritize it all year long, and not attempt a cheap fix via convention.

BluegrassDem
(1,693 posts)Colorado was a swing state and that convention definitely helped Obama cement his ground operation in the state. They were able to get so many new volunteers, etc. Also, the local media coverage can't be ignored. We can do the same thing for WI in 2020.
Midwestern Democrat
(806 posts)Obama in 2008 because if you look at past convention sites before that (listed below are the sites since 1932), it appears they used to generally just pick the place they felt was best (and it's obvious Chicago was their favorite before 1968):
Chicago - 1932, 1940, 1944, 1952, 1956, 1968, 1996
Philadelphia - 1936, 1948, 2016
Los Angeles - 1960, 2000
Atlantic City - 1964
Miami - 1972
New York - 1976, 1980, 1992
San Francisco - 1984
Atlanta - 1988
Boston - 2004
Denver - 2008
Charlotte - 2012

(2,343 posts)Having been there a few times on business, I've never been impressed with downtown and the hotel selection. And to be honest, for me to be interested in going to the convention, I'd want swanky amenities, good restaurants, plenty of bars in walking distance of everything, and good weather. I'd probably only go on the convention floor for the vote and the acceptance speech. I'd have no interest wearing funny hats and face painting to listen to an endless parade of party up-and-comers, outgoing party giants, and "everyday" American suffering through something the presidential candidate is supposedly going to fix.
Just seems to me the conventions dont really serve a useful purpose.
So...I guess I'm not a convention kind of guy! Lol

(34,857 posts)It's the perfect fit for the type of election we'll need to run in 2020. Blue collar. Midwest. Large black population (40% black). We need Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania to win in 2020 - three states NO Democrat has any business losing.
We're still an election cycle or two out from flipping Texas and I'm not sure Miami brings anything to the table because I'm convinced Florida is too far gone.
Milwaukee would be a fantastic choice.
