MSNBC. has been covering it for nearly an hour! It's important but not THAT important. Must be a very slow news day.

(6,363 posts)Apparently, when the investigation turned from Smollett as a victim to Smollett as more of an instigator/architect, she made some comment about that being a "modern day lynching".
I'm not posting the results of the search because they appear to be all hard right wingers - but that's the story that's being pressed on that side of the divide.
I don't think it sticks but their interest in dinging one of the current front runners is pretty obvious.

(82,383 posts)everyone believed it at first, so she'd no different.

(6,363 posts)part of why I didn't want to post the links/content...but it's the story the other side is trying to tell and maybe the reason this thing keeps getting a new life.
Usual RW bullchit - throw everything at the wall, hoping the candidate will have to spend their time washing the wall (vs. campaigning on their own message). Then see what sticks and keep hammering. Classic RW campaign tactic.
f'ck 'em.

(9,095 posts)That is what Trump does every day. He lies about important stuff, like Russia meddling, North Korea, climate change, etc. He creates hoaxes like the border crisis, but never is he held to the same standard as some actor most people had never previously heard of.

(46,337 posts)If news networks can stick with easy stories like Smolett, they will.
Meanwhile, the Weather Channel ran with climate change news, especially highlighting the Australian heat wave.

(18,101 posts)They swallowed it hook line and sinker and ran with it. They were fools, now they must destroy him to divert attention.
They should have exercised a lot more scrutiny at the beginning.

(6,280 posts).... that those who most wish it would go away are those that jumped on the "poor victim" train 5 minutes after the incident was reported without regard to access of any actual facts on the case. I would be embarrassed, and thankful that a lot of people do not rely upon my decision making skills. Remember, there is a difference in treating someone like a victim until the facts of the case are known, and stating their opinion as fact without any corroborating evidence.

(27,813 posts)I'm very sorry that he felt the need to invent this narrative, and I'm sorry for whatever went on in his life to drive him to it.
And that's that; I'd far rather examine the root causes of why people invent these scenarios (remember Susan Smith?) than just watch this endless coverage. In this regard, we have not moved forward from crowds gathering to watch hangings in the public square, or putting people in stocks, or people who crowd courtrooms for murder cases of people they don't know. We are a voyeuristic society, I guess.
I hope he gets the help he needs and that we stop spending time on this (oh, and I'm not saying that this is really equivalent to Susan Smith killing two children, but I also feel that the media, and maybe the justice system, never really examined all the things that pushed that mentally unstable women to do what she did). People reach breaking points and act in strange ways, and it's unfortunate, but I don't think we need to dance of the graves of their sanity or reason.

Nah, that doesn't need as much coverage as the guy who lied about a hate crime.

(16,110 posts)women who lie about being raped are nationwide front page news. They figure that the one who does the wrong thing makes the real crimes less awful and the criminals worthy of being set free with no consequences.

(38,317 posts)Trump would be nobody without it. His whole fucking life is a stupid publicity stunt and people get hurt.
My television plays DVDs and Netflix. That's all it does. I still have no idea who Smollet is except for what I read here on DU. I gather he was following the same shopworn adage Trump does, that there's no such thing as bad publicity. Unfortunately that only works for straight white guys.

Its a shame. The guy should have known he would have been caught by the cops and crucified by the right.
