Bear Grylls faces fine after killing and cooking frog in Bulgarian national park

Bear Grylls has landed himself in hot water and faces a potential fine after killing and cooking a frog while filming in a protected national park in Bulgaria.

The British adventure TV presenter filmed an episode of his Running Wild series in Bulgaria's Rila mountains in 2017 alongside US ballroom dancer Derek Hough, and was seen gutting and cooking a frog.

But Bulgaria's environment ministry said Thursday that Grylls had violated the nature reserve's environmental regulations by killing the animal, swimming in a lake and lighting a fire.

"It is evident from the film material that during the shooting there were breaches to the regulations and rules of conduct in protected areas: entering and swimming in the water basin of the Karakashevo lake, lighting a fire, and catching and killing an animal," a spokesperson for the ministry said in a statement to the AFP news agency.

For Christ sakes man. It makes sense to learn the laws of any place you're visiting.

They should not have chosen a park where there are regulations.

also has a newer show out now (NBC) called Running Wild that partners him with celebrities to demonstrate surviving in certain survival scenarios. It is for this show that Grylls apparently has crossed the line in breaking environmental law in Bulgaria.

Like Les Stroud from Canada, Grylls, an ex-British Special Forces agent, trains and lectures about survival.

I have wondered more than a few times (as I do watch Stroud and Grylls) about the environmental laws that may come in to play during the filming of their shows. And, here we are.

That's a no-no, Bear. I hope you didn't do that knowing it was wrong to do it.

Bear has a pretty cool show, but they've been caught filming on the side of the road and pretending they were miles away from civilization. And I get that, you're selling a product, doesn't mean it's not informative. But killing and eating an animal for no rel reason is a line too far and he should have known the rules. And I'm sure the people filming him had a sandwich if he was hungry.

He's got an informative show though, really can give some helpful tips to surviving in the wild. The one thing I totally disagree with though is the risks he takes. He's always repelling down some rock wall or frozen waterfall or he's running across dangerous rocks. He does this because he's not alone and thus safe from the real threat of dying after being injured because being stuck then. In the wilderness, to survive, you want to stay calm and move very steadily, but carefully. A sprained ankle while alone in the wilderness can mean death, a small fall can mean death, a deep cut can mean death, move deliberately and while under control to avoid injuries.

His newest book. I bought right after the holidays. Mostly general knowledge stuff but some cool tips. It's a good book to have.

6. It's not unthinkable that the dude thought frogs don't count as 'animals' in the law ...

I mean, dude's eating a damn frog. Doesn't that sorta suggest he's trying to avoid running afoul of the rules? It kinda does to me.

One might think that amphibians and reptiles (and perhaps fish) don't count, whereas mammals and probably birds ... would.

Obviously he should've tried to make sure before doing so, but it could be an honest mistake is all I'm saying.

13. Of course, but if one were to assume that it's an anti-hunting regulation, which is not unreasonable

to suppose ... one might conclude that "nobody hunts frogs, they're not 'game'" ...

Just saying, even though he's clearly in the wrong, it may not have been an intentional flaunting of the regulation.

Dude maybe just misunderstood.

Okay. Let's assume he's so stupid that he thinks hunting a frog is not hunting.

So let's give the idiot that one.

Which part of the "No Fires" rule did he misunderstand? Or do we assume he's that kind of moron, too?

At what point do we quit twisting ourselves into pretzels trying to defend this guy and admit that maybe he just doesn't give a shit about the rules?

In most of the civilized world hunting or fishing without the appropriate licenses, or in protected areas, will get you into some deep shit.
