Bolton scraps plans to visit South Korea 'to focus on events in Venezuela'

President Trump's national security adviser John Bolton has reportedly canceled a planned trip to South Korea in order to address the ongoing political crisis in Venezuela.

A spokesman for the National Security Council told The Hill in an email on Saturday that Bolton would not take his scheduled trip next week to South Korea in order to "focus on events in Venezuela."

The spokesman added that Bolton would still attend the upcoming summit between President Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un in Hanoi, Vietnam.

"Ambassador Bolton has canceled his travel to the Republic of Korea to focus on events in Venezuela," said Garrett Marquis, according to CNN.

This is what the South Korean media is reporting today.

Why, I don't know. Pompeo will be there, reportedly. Biegun is already there meeting with Kim Hyuk Chol, his counterpart for working negotiations. Biegun is getting a lot of media attention. Yesterday there was only a short meeting. Biegun was photographed walking on a Hanoi street talking and smiling with a small shopkeeper with a few security guards milling around.

Kim is bringing his sister, Kim Yo Jong, Kim Yong Chol, the vice chairman that nobody on the US team likes, Ri Yong Ho, the foreign minister, and Ri Su Yong, the older former minister of foreign affairs. Ri Sol Ju, Kim's wife is not on the delegation list, and hasn't been observed thus far with the delegation.

Kim's advance security team arrived at the Hanoi airport in an Air Koryo IL-76, cargo aircraft and moved to the Mellia Hotel. It is believed the talks will take place at the Metropole Hotel where tight security measures are in effect. Trump's delegation is expected to stay at the Marriot.
