as tempting as it may be. God or whoever doesn't punish groups of people of course (what did the many tragic situations in LA do to deserve Katrina)? My mom and brother live in Tampa - but that isn't why I am posting this.
How I am handling it....the Repub convention is going to be a horror show, no matter if it happens or not. Yes, I am a bleeding heart, but I worry about just the one person who could lose everything they have, or get harmed or killed - having lived through Hurricane Fran here in NC in 1996, these storms are nothing to take lightly.
And I don't mean it for this to come across as preachy or anything - it is just that I think we on the left are more empathetic and can play things better and cleaner than those on the right.
OK - that's it......back to our regularly scheduled discussions!

Good nooz. this is expected to hit as a CAT 1. The real damage is being done in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba... by the time it reaches Florida it might even be a TC...
THis is why everybody is making the jokes, not because it will affect real people. Now if we can get it to do a targeted strike ONLY on the convention... then you will make a believer out of me.

(37,161 posts)When Gloria went up the east coast he claimed God heard his prayers and spared Virginia Beach. Now, hurricaines have been hitting, missing, and near-missing the east coast since the Atlantic was wide enough to fuel storms that big (i.e., millions of years), so it was just his usual oral backwind, but the eye did hit where I lived.
Lots of trees down, but luckily for us it hit at low tide, which helped limit flooding.
nadinbrzezinski
(154,021 posts)low tide and a few other factors.
But this was going to happen, jokes were written all over it.
As I said in another thread (I added to only hit the convention), you will make a real believer if Isaac only hits the convention and adds some fire and brimstone to the mix. Then trust me, I will go to Temple every Friday and even keep a kosher kitchen. (Which is a real drag)
I am very aware of the damage it could do. So, as a no joke, let's hope it loses most of it's energy before it hits Florida and when it does hit, low tide. That will reduce the damage from water by a LOT. (Of course Pat will claim God heard his prayer, but oh well)

It is important to understand how they rationalize these things.
Granted, I do NOT want the storm to hit Tampa at all, but that is a personal thing.

(15,064 posts)and destruction is not a joke, but, the irony is spectacular. I don't think people here think God is punishing anyone. You can't stop a hurricane, tornado, volcano or asteroid. The only thing we as vulnerable human beings is to treat it with humor.
In the case of a hurricane when one is coming I'm going to get the hell out of the way unless the roads aren't blocked because the infrastructure of the roads and bridges have collapsed due to the lack of funding because some right wing politician doesn't want to raise taxes on the rich.

My girlfriend's mother lives in Tampa, says she's stocked up and hoping Issac rains on their parade.
Me? I hope the storm comes. I don't want anyone harmed or homes damaged. I just want an evacuation of the area and their planned photo ops and free air time busted up.

(30,674 posts)We are merely mocking their ridiculousness. We aren't stooping to their level, because ONLY MORONS would believe God sends storms to smite Republican enemies, and never them. In fact, only MORONS believe God sends storms, and not, you know, science.
So I appreciate your caution, but I think it's unwarranted. I could just go back to calling them morons instead of just mocking their beliefs. It's more fun (IMO) to engage.

(14,524 posts)Just a thought from someone who is tired of people telling everyone else what is and isn't "proper to say" as an economic and social WAR is being waged against us. You want to coddle the enemy, fine. I want them beat so far down they never get back up.

(14,524 posts)... by not letting the bastards use me as a doormat.
This is a WAR for the future of our kids and grandkids, and as such, I'll use any and every means at my disposal to achieve victory. We are living with the results of WEAK politicians kowtowing to those whose entire intent is our ultimate demise.
If you HONESTLY respect my view, then STOP telling me (and others who are also fed up with the repeated surrendering of our Democratic Values) how to conduct ourselves on the field of battle. If you don't want to fight with all you have, FINE, then get the hell out of the way and watch how it's done.

(3,398 posts)It is likely to be very windy for 6-8 hours and dump a ton of rain, but don't expect it to result in loss of life of major property damage.
That said, I delight in the fact that the weather is going to 'rain on their parade.' It will turn half the conversation not on the convention itself but the weather outside. And that will be next week's contribution to keeping the republicans from focusing on any message they may want to get out.
