and Rand Paul even used it. Are people really stupid enough to think healthcare professionals would work for free?

Trust me, no one worked for free. Just no shareholders with their hands out.
That particular hospital was sold to a for-profit group who quickly discovered that they could not make a profit in our area and 5 years later, sold it again to a non-profit group.

Most likely I never will.

I worked for a non-profit organization that provided services to developmentally disabled people. Our Executive Director made $130,000 per year. The average staff made between $40,000 and $65,000 per year. You can make a living off of the work. The goal of the organization however, is not to get rich.

I earn a pretty generous salary.
