Pete Souza tells a story about Obama meeting Putin in Normandy, France in 2014:?1551372739
The Guardian
I wasnt supposed to be here for this picture. It was taken on the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings all the heads of state had gathered there and were coming out of an impromptu luncheon. The official photographers from each country had been kicked out we were all supposed to leave the building. But I have a knack of making myself small and sticking around.
The shot shows the kind of interaction President Obama had with President Putin during his tenure. It was 2014, a particularly tense time between the two countries. You can see in the facial expressions and gestures that this was a very serious conversation. There are interpreters stood behind them, but I get the impression from Putins face that he understood exactly what was being said in English.
I was within earshot. I cant recount specifically what they said, but I knew the subject matter. Can I say what it was? It was about some of Russias actions in the world. Lets leave it at that.
This conversation went on for a while: they werent thinking about me. To them, I was just one of many people in the room, coming and going in different directions. I started out shooting horizontally and tighter, and then switched to vertical, backing up to show their entire bodies. Compositionally, that seemed to show the body language better.

He's one of those people that shows his brain functioning (or not) on his face. Can't be a real dealer with that type of visual presentation.
Dump is obviously unable to really interact with anyone, even another wannabe dictator. Did daddy Fred spoil his ability to be somewhat empathetic (rhetorical).
Obviously his attention is on the next bugger. Does Ho Chi Min city have some good joints? (From my recollection, yes.)

(58,349 posts)All the furniture is smaller/lower in Japan, and I imagine it's the same in Vietnam. I bang my knees on tables in Japan all the time because things are built for an average height that is much less than average height of Americans.

(14,918 posts)a local clientele usually has little plastic chairs that resemble a kiddie patio set here in the U.S. An upscale venue that hosts the international set would have more conventionally sized furniture. I definitely think 45 was being punked, but with plausible deniability, as in, Oh, that wasn't intentional, everybody knows the chairs are short over here!
Rabrrrrrr
(58,349 posts)so many times in Japan I've felt like I'm sitting on kiddie furniture.
Or on the subways, people who are are holding on to the straps, and I'm holding on to the bar that's holding the straps because the straps are too low...
And you could be right about the punking - they surely have larger chairs to cater to westerners/tall people, but likely chose to go with the regular sized ones just to annoy Donald. Pretty sad when an evil dictator shitpot gets more deference than the American president because the evil dictator shitpot is more respected.

(58,349 posts)or his utter boredom and disinterest and being totally out of his league comes out loud and clear. The latter in the case of the photo of him and Kim on the chairs.
Oh, and how I miss Bourdain... damn, what a loss to lose his voice. Brilliant. I rarely care much about celebrity deaths or mourn them, but he's one of the few whose death still hurts.
Obama always knew how to act and how to comport himself and be an adult. For the most part, even Dubya knew how to be presidential; though he goofed it numerous times, and occasionally looked like a moron, but still, he understood the role and the decorum needed to be the president of the U.S. He totally fucked the country, sure; but he still maintained a certain non-embarrassing dignity and decorum that showed he understood the magnitude and importance of the office he held. For Donald, it's just another thing that gets in the way of his narcissism and whenever people aren't talking about him, he gets bored and tunes out, even when it's negotiating nuclear stuff with an evil dangerous dictatorial shitpot.

(1,220 posts)Look at that body language. pootin was having his ass handed to him by a REAL LEADER and he knew it.
pootin doesn't need an interpreter. pootin speaks perfect English. Check out this interview with Platon, the only photographer to ever get a portrait of pootin.
"With Putin, I think that was the first moment I ever had to deal with this sense of intimidation. He walks in with this giant entourage that makes P. Diddy look like Mickey Mouse.
I nervously said: "Mr. President, it's a great honor to be in your fine country. I have a question for you. Before we take pictures, I want you to know that I'm an Englishman, and I love the Beatles. And I would like to know if you like the Beatles."
He says, "I love the Beatles."
I said, "Oh, my God, I didn't know you spoke English."
He said, "I speak perfect English."
I said, "Well, who's your favorite Beatle?"
And he said, "Paul."
"Wow. What's your favorite song? Is it 'Back in the USSR'?"
He said, "No, it's 'Yesterday.' Think about it."

(81,267 posts)President Obama was clearly the Alpha here, using his height advantage to tower over AND bend INTO Putins space. Putin, on the other hand, is slumped, chin in, not standing tall and ramrod straight, (as weve repeat seen him with trump) eyes lowered, in a clearly defensive and submissive posture. And look at his right hand. Pulled in and upwards across his chest, as though subconsciously protective. A gesture that telegraphs him wanting to put a block up against Obama.
Sometimes people communicate clearly, with their bodies and postures, how theyre REALLY feeling - eve when their words say something different. This shot suggests to me that Putin did NOT feel like the Alpha. And didnt even feel like trying.
CharleyDog
(757 posts)as viewer, imagine Obama has both arm back and is pushing he chest into Putin that says, "you want a piece of me?" A challenge, "if you want to play this game, PuTin, I can take you on if you want, and deliver some pain."
