Majority of Americans Now See Russia as Threat

JON PARTON

... The Gallup poll found that the majority of Americans, 52 percent, said Russia is a “critical threat” to the United States for the first time since the pollster asked the question in 2004. The last time Gallup asked the question in 2016, only 39 percent of respondents said they considered Russia a threat.

Russia also topped the list of countries Americans considered the greatest enemy of the U.S., with 32 percent. Another 21 percent named China, while 14 percent listed North Korea. When the same question was asked last year, 51 percent said North Korea was the United States’ top enemy compared to just 19 percent who said Russia was. While Democrats were more likely to name North Korea as the second largest threat to the U.S., Republicans were likely to list China (22 percent) and Iran (19 percent) as the top enemy state ...

My advisors, who had attended Harvard, told me not to waste my time. Given the lag between applying to grad school, graduating, and then becoming faculty, they said there was at least a 10-year lag between reality and reputation--and that the names that made Harvard a great grad school (for my field) had left 3, 4, 5 years before or had died. "Don't waste your time."

It's longer, it seems, with the public's appreciation of rivalry and foreign-policy threat. Russia was #1 15 years ago. It was peaking about the time when it was thoroughly verboten to say that Russia was a rival or foe.

Now, because of a loss of power, it's suddenly de rigueur to make Russia the existential threat against all that's right and good and pure in the world. Us, that is.

It's at least down to #2. Maybe #3.

4. OT, but I'm curious now. Where did you end up going for grad school?

In what field? I chose based on which one was going to pay my way through TAships.

1. America
2. Russia
3. Saudi Arabia

But I suppose N. Korea's on the list somewhere too.

Frankly I feel more threatened by impending ecological events, economic uncertainty, and stupid racists than I do any particular state actors.
