in North Carolina in 2011.
Elections have consequences, and this guy is one of them.
He represents the 11th District in NC, which had been represented by Democrat Heath Shuler, prior to the redistricting.
In 2011 the Republican-dominated legislature redrew the district, shifting most of Asheville to the 10th district. The new map split Asheville in such a way that in some neighborhoods, one side of the street moved to the 10th while the other side of the street stayed in the 11th[5].
To make up for the loss in population, the 11th absorbed some strongly Republican territory in the Foothills which had previously been in the 10th. On paper, the 11th was one of the strongest Republican districts in the South. In February 2012 Shuler announced he would not seek a fourth term.[6] Meadows won the seat in 2012

So, what the Republican dominated NC Legislature did was split Asheville (heavily Democratic) away from the 11th district and stick it on the edge of the heavily Republican 10th District. They transferred some 10th District Republicans to the 11th district to offset the population from Asheville and voila! created another Republican district.

Republicans are cheats. So it's not a surprise to see a Republican cheat from North Carolina cozying up to the orange Cheat-in-Chief.

(31,392 posts)the Committee hearing yesterday. A lot of people were glued to the hearing all day long (including me).
I live in the heavily Democratic 4th District in NC. It's one of the few Democratic districts that couldn't be shifted by the Republican gerrymandering of 2011. NC really has been a purple state. It went for Obama in 2008. Prior to the gerrymandering, we had an almost even split of Democratic/Republican Representatives to Congress. It used be 7/6 one way or the other. It's now 10 Repubs to 3 Dems as a result of the gerrymandering.
The damn Republicans in the State Legislature have been ordered several times by the Supreme Court to fix the gerrymandered district maps, and they just shine it. I have nothing but contempt for Republicans in this state and it's in part, because of this cheating mentality.
And we've been living with this for almost a decade because Dems didn't turn out in the mid-terms of 2010 and the State House was overtaken by Republicans who then gerrymandered the hell out of the Congressional district maps.

(31,392 posts)The gerrymandering is so obvious when you look at the maps and see the hole made by taking Asheville away from the 11th and putting it in the 10th.

(31,392 posts)Tapes have surfaced since yesterday of Meadows telling Obama to go back to Kenya. He's a birther POS. I really do not know how/why Cummings is friends with him. Cummings must just be an amazingly gracious and tolerant person.

(31,392 posts)The Court struck down the revised maps and told them to do it again. That's when they got away with whining about how close it was to the election so they couldn't possibly do new districts.

Republicans are a bunch of whiny little cheaters. I really have no respect for them.

(31,392 posts)and explained what happened when the freshman Congresswoman called him out for the racist stunt when he had a black woman who works in the Administration stand by Meadows side--saying nothing--while Meadows spoke for her.
ODonnell showed clips from Meadows' 2012 campaign where he talked about sending Obama back to Kenya. Lawrence called Meadows a racist and said he wasn't bound by Congressional rules of decorum so would not be apologizing.

(57,097 posts)supported the Union were slave owners. I feel like I have some karma to work through.
The one who was the governor of NC became a Confederate congressman, the one who was governor of Kentucky was arrested when Lincoln suspended habeas corpus and imprisoned without due process and when released went to South America for the rest of the war.. One of his nephews won a posthumous Medal of Honor for his part in the Andersonville Raid (The Great Train Chase).
The son of the NC governor donated the equivalent of $120M on 2019 dollars to the NC state university and was a founder of Union Carbide.
We have a complicated history.

(205,467 posts)And as Bill Maher described in this week's "New Rules," we cannot look at the past by today's standards. That was the way things were back then and it's not up to us to judge them - they did the best they could with what they knew at the time.
Aside from my Dutch grandmother whose ancestors go way back, my mother's parents (Polish) and my Dad's paternal grandparents (Irish) "came over on the last boat," as my mother described it. But they all served, both of my grandfathers served in WWI. My mother's father arrived in this country, they made him a citizen and sent him to France - and my paternal grandfather served on horseback, delivering ammunition to the front - while his brother (my great uncle) who signed up with him was in the worst of the fighting and was awarded the Silver Star. I went to a ceremony honoring him just last year. So I'm proud of my ancestors and you should be too!
