With apologies to the Oklahomans here:

We have family in Tucson and my best friend lives in Long Beach. If we make a road trip this summer, it is likely to be to California by way of Tucson. Starting from southern Illinois, the common sense route would take us through Oklahoma City. Instead. We will add miles to our trip and stay on I-70 through Kansas and then catch I-25 south.

Oklahoma just passed a "wild west" law: if you want to buy and carry a firearm---open or concealed, I believe---do it. No training required. No permit required. Add to this that I know for a fact there are RWNJs in Oklahoma because several of them are also "RINOs"--- relatives in name only.

In view of the above, why would I risk traversing the state? Why would I want to contribute to their tax base by stopping for a burger or fuel?

Oklahoma is no longer "OK" with me.

7. If I have the time and the money, I much prefer to drive these days.

It's more relaxing and if you take some side roads, more interesting.
Besides seeing shoppers with their pistols on, etc., there's been no
unusual spike in gun violence, except for that incident in Tombstone
last year. One of the Vigilantes that act for the tourists had forgotten
to replace his real bullets for blanks. A guy was shot but not too badly.
The Vigilante lost his job.

in the wild west, people coming to town had to leave their firearms at the sheriff's office.

and then pass stupid laws like that that convince sane, smart people to never want to visit or even drive through their state.

14. I think that we are going to see America "cored out"

I think coastal states, except for maybe South Carolina, and Lousiana (and even they are getting better) and hopeless Mississippi and Alabama are trending toward blue, it will take a few more years, but it is happening slowly. The coasts are rapidly accounting for more and more of the nation's economy, along with the northern tier states. The central core, except for Colorado and New Mexico and to some extent, Arizona, are becoming more red and less successful at building vibrant economies. At some point the country will core out as the coastal and interior blue states leave the others behind.
