An expert in political science explains what makes Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez such an effective member

[link:https://www.alternet.org/2019/03/an-expert-in-political-science-explains-what-makes-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-such-an-effective-member-of-congress/|

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has taken Washington, D.C by storm.

She successfully ran an insurgent, grass-roots Congressional campaign. She is exceptionally bright. She is incredibly media savvy. She is hugely charismatic, because she is telegenic and photogenic, but also because she consistently seems to be a sincere, authentic, and truly nice and caring human being. In an age of bullshit, she is “real.” And she has the courage of her convictions.

This was placed beautifully on display during yesterday’s House Oversight and Reform Committee hearings featuring over seven hours of testimony by Michael Cohen. AOC, one of the most junior members of that committee, and thus one of the last to have her five minutes to question Cohen, was masterful, something immediately recognized by major media commentators on MSNBC and CNN. Today’s New York Times featured a major op ed by Caroline Frederickson on this, bearing the clear headline: “How Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Won the Cohen Hearing: Too many representatives chose to bloviate instead of interrogate — except for one.”

President Obama was a handsome smart man who was charming and charismatic when he was first running for the Presidency. He showed everyone what he was capable of during the 2004 DNC as well. I see a lot of the same qualities in Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and is showing herself quite capable. I know it's early to say this but she just seems to have it.

Read that again. Quite impressive, right? And she runs as a democratic socialist? Yeah, I thought so.
And she'll be eligible for president in 8 years, right?

It sure seems to me that a lot of things over the past 10 years, whether they are good or bad, are all happening for a reason. There has to be a reason we have to go thru these 4 years of hell.

One can only hope for a great democrat victory next year, that will last 8 years, and beyond.

I wish every politician was like her, cut the BS and just do the job and serve constituents. She is brilliant has more power than far more experienced members of congress. She will be president one day if she manages to never change. I hate to see congress changing her. The right and some on the left even are absolutely terrified of her because she just can’t be bought and has the power to destroy many experienced politicians.

She rose to power on the back of an insurgent activist base, but she’s her own woman - she will choose her stands, her deals and her retreats, it’s what politicians do.

She picked a line of questioning in which Cohen would be cooperative (some other lines of questioning he deflected, esp. Russia-related ones), she asked specific questions instead of wasting her time sermonizing, her questions were chosen as to lead the committee to other relevant witnesses/documents. This is pretty basic stuff, and the remarkable thing is not so much that she did it well, it is that other Congresspersons fail to do this well.

Her preparation contrasted sharply with Trump's prep for his ill-advised Kim summit.

If they see the positive reaction to AOC's use of her time, the next hearing may have more interrogation and less pontification.

I'm glad I've lived long enough to see such a fresh young face with such good, strong values take her place in Washington.
