(5,997 posts)It was pretty much my very first exposure to national politics, other than vague memories of Viet Nam casualty reports and Civil Rights riots.
Republican presidents have all been criminals my entire lifetime.

(51,608 posts)My first election was when I voted for Carter and I have voted in every election since...all Dem candidates of course. I wish I had known then what was in store for me and how the corrupt, greedy hypocritical GOP would control my health and wealth. I probably would have moved to a different country if I had known.

We were so young, so naive.
Good times.

(32,641 posts)... if we didn't re-elect him. Fuck that noise! It was my first time voting in 1972 and there was NO WAY I would have ever voted for him. As a matter of fact I've never voted for a Republican for President in my lifetime.
The reason Nixon won by a landslide in 1972 was dirty tricks - nowadays we call it ratfucking. They used dirty tricks and subterfuge during the primary to eliminate at least 3 very strong Democrats who had the best chance to beat him. Instead Nixon's opponent was was Senator McNobody from Nowhere, South Dakota (George McGovern). Nixon would have probably lost against Ed Muskie, Ted Kennedy or Hubert Humphrey. Maybe even Henry Scoop Jackson could have beaten him.
The Watergate break-in happened right around that time too, and the Democratic headquarters was in that hotel. Nowadays it's much easier just to hack the DNC and publish all the stolen emails. Less messy.

(13,556 posts)One of my fondest memories was when I had to be at the studio really early in the morning and was recognized by the secret service guys in the lobby and given a little metal tag to wear when I walked in, and then hit the rest room and peed next to Mr. McGovern. We spent the rest of the day taping campaign commercials. I was working as floor manager and got to talk to McGovern a lot and really got to like him as a regular guy.
I of course voted for him lol.
And Bernie reminds me of him.

(2,120 posts)He sent his financial records to the IRS every year and asked them to do his taxes.
He said that as a legislator who had written parts of the tax code, he could not in good conscience
do anything less than that.

(13,556 posts)He was a wonderful person. We have missed out on so many people that would have been fine presidents because either they lost the election under specious circumstances or were murdered.

(2,120 posts)....George McGovern's decency, Walter Mondale's values. We struck gold with Barack Obama
but considering what could have been and how different the country would be today is really heart breaking.

A badly disorganized Dem party. A tremendously well-financed Repub party playing the traditional dirty tricks tactics.
It's a warning from the past that even though it looks like we might have a great candidate, it can all go to hell pretty quickly.

(67,782 posts)....I was 25 years old at the time, two years into my working career. Once the Congressional hearings started, I went out to my car at lunchtime every day and drove around for an hour, listening to WCBS' coverage. Then I couldn't wait to get home and watch the ONLY evening news we had back then, at 7:00 - Walter Cronkite.
News reporting and "media" sure have come a long way since then.
