She is very smart and she is kicking ass. She is also an American who believes in helping the American people. She believes in fairness and she is a believer in the FDR New Deal way of doing things. Republicans hate that.

I have held back a little bit on AOC, but what some people call divisiveness I call robust debate.
Saying that AOC or Bernie are far to the left also makes me laugh. Look at their policies, they are all popular with working Americans. AOC and Bernie aren't leftists, they are centrists. Or is the rest of the civilized world wrong?

(14,576 posts)to make these things happen. Healthcare, expanded Social Security, a Green New Deal...
Nixon tried to get national healthcare and said we are all Keynesians.
Eisenhower railed against the MIC and spoke of compassion toward the poor.
Jefferson railed against banks and against allowing bankers to run the Central Bank.
Teddy Roosevelt gave us the Square Deal and was the father of National Parks.

(9,090 posts)this country has been moved right 15 points just because the cons have the talk radio advantage that dems continue to ignore
everything changed 30 years ago and this is not like watergate - it's an order of magnitude worse and yet the republicons may as well be sucking trump's dick. that's not because they're scared of trump, they're scared of the guys that motivate and point the spittle-flecked base in their direction in trump's defense - limbaugh and the few hundred liars that have to follow him to keep their jobs, who might as well be getting calls from russian trolls
dems collectively cannot say they're getting "got AOC's back", and it matters - like limbaugh calling christine blasey ford a liar and dem operative for 3 weeks straight with no response from the left - just like anita hill
heres limbaugh on 1/22/19, while calling AOC a dunce, upstart little crumb-cruncher, commie, babe, marxist, etc., created a silly premise that Democratic leaders would get media to take her out just so he could repeat take her out over and over
..
transcribed at Sonix.ai:
so the day is going to come where she's gonna make somebody (Dems) mad or she's going to be too successful and will legitimately challenge somebody that has more power than she has. And they're not going to be interested in working with her and welcoming her in because they're not going to trust her so they're gonna take her out. This happens. I mean Soviet leaders were routinely targeted for assassination. They tried to kill Gorbachev during perestroika and glasnost.

I love it that Speaker Pelosi has taken her under her wing, it prevents right wing Democrats from bashing her, not that they would. To clarify, united we stand, divided we fall.

(1,292 posts)There's a number of progressive Democrats with the same constellation of positions as AOC. IMO, a big part of their fixating on her for demonization is that she's a young latina woman (and young and attractive and boldly able to take them on).
Even if AOC was off base (which she isn't), she's a freshman Congress member who has been in office for 2 months. The GOP has had countless batshit insane members (Bob Dornan, Louis Gomert) and the left didn't fixate continuously on one ridiculous Congress person.
The right wing media machine's standard operating procedure is to pick one person to demonize and then to relentlessly stay on message. It allows their undereducated, dopey followers to have a simplistic narrative to latch onto with well defined villains. It's like professional wrestling.

Don't underestimate the value of that, from their perspective. The transition was almost immediate late last fall. I saw it on all the sports sites I frequent. The posters who always ridiculed Hillary suddenly were mocking Ocasio-Cortez.

The young congresswoman has turned the tables on the Wall Street Journal after it accused her of taking pride in ignorance
Read here: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/mar/02/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-republicans-ignorance
(snips)
Large swaths of America appear to be suffering from a debilitating condition known as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Derangement Syndrome (AOCDS). Symptoms include bouts of extreme condescension, an inability to stop sputtering the word socialist, and overwhelming anger that a young woman of colour is unapologetically succeeding.
----
On Tuesday Turner ranted in the Wall Street Journal that Ocasio-Cortez has little regard for the system that made it possible for her to be elected to Congress. Turner also lamented that the congresswoman leads a generation of young people to take pride in their ignorance of the laws of nature, of history, of the Constitution, of the eternal battle for freedom and still succeed.
As you can imagine, the congresswoman had a few words to say in response to this, tweeting on Thursday that: I guess WSJ Editorial Page takes pride in their ignorance of our nations history of slavery, Jim Crow, & mass incarceration; willful doubt on the decades of science on climate change; targeting of indigenous peoples, and the classist, punitive agenda targeting working families.
Ocasio-Cortez hit the bigoted nail on the head with that. After all, what Turner was essentially saying in her op-ed was that minorities should respect a system that doesnt respect them. That Ocasio-Cortez, who doesnt come from a rich and powerful family, doesnt have an Ivy League education, and has Puerto Rican heritage, should be grateful she is allowed to exist in America, let alone succeed. And that AOC certainly shouldnt mess with the laws of nature and history that mean rich white men, and a few rich white women, are our leaders and superiors. Turner, and conservatives like her, are terrified by Ocasio-Cortez because she symbolizes a new generation who arent going to shut up and be grateful, but are intent on changing an unequal system.
If you need any more evidence of how panicked conservatives are about the young congresswoman, just take a look at this years Conservative Political Action Conference, which features heavy doses of Ocasio-Cortez scaremongering. Perhaps the most ridiculous examples of this was Sebastian Gorka, a former Trump official, announcing to the crowd that democratic socialists like Ocasio-Cortez want to rebuild your home [and] take away your hamburgers. This is what Stalin dreamt about but never achieved. Republican men are clearly terrified AOC is coming for their meat.

They can't defend their lifestyle so they resort to name calling, hoping it pushes off others from "joining" Congress. But they know its only a matter of time, so they are trying to make sure their privileged lifestyle's stay while they are alive.

(5,275 posts)Medicare is Socialism, our Interstate Highway System was built, by a Republican, Eisenhower, using funds acquired by top marginal tax rates of 80 percent or so. The Right depends on the stupidity of its base, depends on the bulk of them voting against their own financial interests.
Republicans are counting on people not realizing any of this in other words.
BTW AOCs questioning of Cohen was brilliant
