As a party, we sometimes balk at the idea of taking the bolder option of a policy because we think the reaction from the Republicans will hurt us with some mythical centrists, who may or may not matter. Newsflash: Republicans will always characterize what we do as extreme, socialism, etc., so we gain nothing by negotiating with ourselves.
