The Uninhabitable Earth and the Weather Channel's "SOS How to Survive"

Last edited Tue Mar 5, 2019, 05:31 PM - Edit history (1)

Having started reading The Uninhabitable Earth which portrays the multiple dangers that await us as the effects of climate change become frequent disruptive nightmares. Heat waves, flooding, hurricanes, wildfires, food shortages, etc. Great book but scary.

The survivalists always seemed somewhat crazy to me, but at the other extreme, those of us who spend our lives in cubicles and offices, accustomed to creature comforts at home with the push of a button, may not be equipped to handle much.

The Weather Channel has this nice set of programs called “SOS How to Survive with Creek Stewart” that tells stories of people surviving after being trapped in snowstorms, floods, hurricanes, etc. it’s really interesting to see the techniques that solve simple problems. For example, using a long rope and a few carabiners to multiple your force by 5, if you need to move a heavy log, or the importance of making a “mattress” of branches to lift off the snow so you don’t freeze.

Do you have concerns about becoming better prepared for natural disasters? Do you have any resources?

(I would like to ask, “isn’t it time to resurrect the “civil defense patrols” or something, but I suspect they would just get taken over by the Cult.)
