General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI want establishment Republicans to be asked what their red line is for TRUMP.
Remaining establishment Republicans, most of whom are hiding. People who may have worked in the Bush administration, or in business, or in government or the military. People who are aghast at his buffoonery and corruption and ignorance and who see the extreme peril in his ways.
What is the red line that will trigger establishment resistance to him?
Is there nothing? Are there no patriots? No one in love with the Constitution?

The problem here is that just as the goalposts keep getting moved, so that "red line" keeps getting repositioned.
I've no doubt there are Republicans who, back in early 2017, told themselves "if he ever says or does this, I'm out" - but then changed their position when he actually DID do or say that.
I think for many it's been a matter of losing their integrity not suddenly, but by inches - in increments so small, they don't even realize how low they've allowed their standards to fall until it's too late.
I believe many GOPers are in SO deep - accepting the lies, ignoring the contradictions, ignoring the corruption - they simply can't get out of the hole they've dug for themselves.
For any Republican to stand up now and denounce the crimes of Spanky and his administration, the obvious question looming in the air would be: "And why did you let it all slide for two years?"
At this juncture, it looks like a clear case of everyone having to be all-in, because if they don't hang together as a group, they will all be hung separately.

(10,274 posts)Fixed that for you. 'The Base' is a cult. The only reason they haven't drank the kool-aid yet is because Trump hasn't yet told them how awesome that will be.

(27,818 posts)... that "being hung separately" is a real concern for certain Republicans who are now under scrutiny - and may not survive a closer look into their own conduct.

(22,671 posts)Their eyes only see red. The only way to reason with what we're seeing is that the constitution has been suspended. The red line has already been crossed, but not for them. They've been told by RW entertainers that we were the ones who crossed it.
WAR.

(1,822 posts)thats their 1 and only "red line". and that will only happen when his policies eventually come home to roost. Anything other than that is "Trump being Trump".

Forget about them, they are not worth the effort. Let's concentrate on the non-voter and convincing them to participate in the electoral process.

(7,142 posts)I know, I live among them in central Pa. I don't waste my time debating with zombies who have zero critical thinking skills. Republicans nearly elected Roy Moore which is a tell. They don't vote for anyone, they vote against Democrats. Democrats have been demonized to the point that they are less than human. No Republican should ever vote for a Dem., that's their belief.

(1,242 posts)The TEA party members said they were independents but always voted for and ran as Republicans. Also, if those sympathetic to the confederacy won't call themselves traitors or won't acknowledge the civil war was about slavery, they will never cop to anything. Remember, according to conservative leaning Gallup (they were the ones that predicted Dewey would beat Truman and that Romney would beat Obama), Nixon had over a 25% approval rating when he was forced to resign as a crook. Republicans are weak, fearful and dishonest - they succumb to this mentality. When it becomes unfashionable again to associate as a Republican, they will become independents or democrats. Right now, it is more effective to go ahead and associate everything Trump does with them. Let them deny they agree with everything then ask them if a Democratic candidate with a better record runs against him will they vote for the Democrat. They will never agree to vote Democratic, so it becomes fair game to keep hitting them over the head with Trump. It doesn't matter if they appear to enjoy it. They hate losing. Many Republicans I know are fair weather fans of anyone winning. They want to be on a winning team and think because Republicans use more abusive methods and scream the loudest, that Republicans look like winners, that Republicans are more savvy. Rumpelstiltskin was more gracious than any die hard Republican ever will be.
I say when it happens, let them suck it. Our society allowed the Republican Great Depression to be renamed the Great Depression. Calvin Coolidge's tax bill helped bring this country to its knees, and they hardly owned up to it back then or even now. Total defeat is the only thing they understand. The southern states seceded because of Lincoln's election - and with an 'over my dead body' attitude left the union. Even after the Brown vs Board unanimous SCOTUS decision: "....segregation now...segregation forever..." along with Nixon's forced bussing. What kind of supreme court in a 5 to 4 decision overturns a civil rights act that gets renewed unanimously because 5 on the court asserted that congressmen felt politically pressured to vote for its renewal? Isn't that political will the foundation of democracy? Republicans just want what they want, regardless of anything else. Greed.

(100,104 posts)There's no line they won't cross. There's no bubble they won't burst. There's no forest they won't burn down. There's no hole deep enough. They want absolute power and they will get it no matter who they have to stomp and whatever embarassing buffoon they have to trot out. These people are drunk with power and they are extremely dangerous.

(4,448 posts)That's their redline
They support Trump because Trump he's the Republican flag bearer. For these messed up people, that's all that matters - is that he's a Republican nominee
Everything else they say. Everything. Is in support of that.
They won't dare come out against Trump, because in their minds, not supporting Trump is the same as supporting Democrats.
