LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. A dean at a New Jersey university resigned saying the school's decision to not consider bringing Chick-fil-A to campus because of its opposition to the LGBT community made her feel "like I had been punched in the stomach."
Cynthia Newman, former dean of Rider University's College of Business Administration, said her views as a "very committed Christian" and the fast food chain's views "mirror" one another.
Newman's resignation was first reported Tuesday by Campus Reform, a conservative news site that bills itself as a higher education watchdog. In a video interview, Newman said she resigned as dean last month. She confirmed the resignation to The Associated Press.
Rider University, located outside Trenton, had sent a survey last year asking students which restaurants they would like to see on campus. In November, Newman said, a second survey was sent but did not include Chick-fil-A as a choice. The university said at the time the restaurant was taken off the list because of its opposition to the LGBT community and their values do not align with Rider's values.

(82,849 posts)Not sure how a "very committed Christian" squares following Jesus and furthering the oppression of society's outcasts, but I suspect former Dean Newman and I read the Bible very differently.

(2,315 posts)She resigned her job as dean but plans to go back to teaching at the university.
Most likely she is already tenured.

I mean it's chicken, not manna from Heaven.
This Dean must not have enjoyed her job much to quit over something so petty.
I'm quitting because of . . . chicken. Really????

(4,131 posts)Ive never seen a Chick fil A that wasnt absolutely packed at lunch time. I suspect their apparent success is simply due to a combination of significantly above average food and service.
Their RW discriminatory practices are abhorrent.

(54,445 posts)The long version is that she is a bigoted, highly intolerant, narrow-minded, prejudiced person who is probably not very pleasant to deal with if you openly hold any beliefs not identical to hers.
I'm betting the school is singing that old Byrds song: "I'll probably feel a whole lot better when you're gone."

(103,856 posts)just cannot find a single religious school that needs teachers...hmmmmm
I have nothing against religious beliefs, but please just keep them to yourself..
I have friends of over 40 years and I cannot tell you the religious affiliation of most of them.. They are friends because of who THEY are..not their religious "flavor".

My Turkish, Kurdish and Arab friends here have NEVER expressed any interest in pushing Islam on me, and my Jewish friends in Europe and the States don't try to push Judaism on me either. But man, the "lord" must be one very insecure deity since his minions seem to feel a day has gone by unfulfilled if they haven't pushed their version of celestial entities on someone who really wasn't interested.

(2,002 posts)So, she didn't really resign, she is just returning to teaching instead of being the COBA Dean. Dollars to donuts she had planned on doing this anyway. The headline makes it sound like she resigned from a six figure salary job over this, when that's not what happened.
(note: I have relatives who teach in higher education and its common for people to take Dean positions, and then decide later that they'd rather teach instead of being an administrator.)

The slaveholders were abhorred by the community and could not get church blessings. The clergy shook down the slaveholders for thousands of dollars to take communion.
Then, the slaveholders got wise, they offered Baptists, Methodists and Presbyterians money, daughters, property and slaves of their own if they promoted them. Soon, pastors were holding two services, one bestowing the virtues of the slaveholders as upstanding people introducing slaves to Christ. The second service was for the slaves, telling them to be good servants, that their lives will be hard on earth, but they will obtain salvation and go to heaven in the afterlife. After 20 years, slave ownership was an honorable profession.

(5,995 posts)Thinking that allowing a fast food place on campus would be to provide variety and service to the students, why chose one that isn't open everyday and would be reluctant to hire or serve some students based on "committed Christian" values?
Wonder if responses following the 1st survey prompted the removal from the 2nd one?

(38,328 posts)The school I graduated from had a good cafeteria that served generous portions of real food, and it was a nice place for students to work.
But I guess that was "socialism." It was replaced with a food court identical to something you'd find in any mall.
When I was a student if you wanted crappy fast food you had to go off campus.

(31,261 posts)Most of the places were mom and pop shops, not chains. But I did use the campus food service as a freshman and sophomore, the food was good, as you stated, it was always fresh and the potions were ample. The meal ticket that I bought at the start of each quarter allowed me three squares per day if I wanted that, typically I skipped breakfast.
