The Cruze cruises: GM assembly plant closing, maybe for good

LORDSTOWN, Ohio — The last compact car rolled off the line Wednesday at General Motors’ massive assembly plant in Ohio as the automaker began moving toward its future while workers wondered about theirs.

GM is eliminating all 1,700 hourly positions, perhaps for good, at the factory near Youngstown, the first of five North American auto plants that it intends to shut down by early next year.

The plant closings are part of a major restructuring for GM, which plans to shed as many as 14,000 workers and shift its focus to making trucks, SUVs and electric and autonomous vehicles.

Most of the jobs being slashed companywide are white-collar positions. But there’s still uncertainty about the fate of the plants because the closings still must be negotiated with the United Auto Workers later this summer.

I keep reading about plant closings in Ohio but that state seems to continually vote Republican.

Ford is stopping all car production except for the Mustang, They seem to be struggling with Lincoln and that's of their own doing from the disastrous designs in the last decade. Old people the reliable standard buyer of large American iron are dying off. GM is already dumped several Cadillac models, including the flagship that the autonomous production would go to. It was give them small cars, well that didn't work, give them electric cars that didn't work, give them trucks, now we have more monstrous than a decade ago, coal burners and they sell. Americans really don't want cars they all want little SUV's, which aren't cheap or totally efficient. Maybe Henry Ford was right give them one model and one color.

they are not going to keep making cars just to keep employees on an assembly line. GM has had a China division and even that's slowing down as cars aren't selling there either. GM is cutting the Blue collar work force by 15% and the While collar executive by 25%.

GM, the nation's largest automaker, will stop producing cars and transmissions at the plants through 2019. In all, six car models were scrapped, leaving the company with nine remaining car models for its four brands, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.

This is global. Trump's tariffs at increasing the costs of vehicles too....

Japanese Auto Makers to Cut Production at Home, Abroad
Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Subaru will idle factories, eliminate temporary workers and possibly move some domestic production offshore to save money.

Auto sales beat expectations for 2018, but 2019 doesn't look as good.

"The picture doesn't look quite as rosy for 2019," said Jessica Caldwell, analyst with California-based Edmunds. "While the economy is still relatively strong, rising interest rates and vehicle prices could force many buyers into the used market, or even price them out of buying a vehicle completely. If the economy weakens or tariffs push prices even higher, things could go south for the auto industry very quickly."

All four of GM's brands slipped in 2018, with Buick down 5.6 percent and Cadillac down 1.1 percent for the year. Chevrolet was down 1.4 percent as sedan sales for the brand continue to steadily decrease. Truck brand GMC fared the best, down only 0.8 percent for the year, as sales of the Terrain SUV, Sierra full-size pickup and Canyon midsize pickup all posted gains.

Meanwhile, Ford's sedan sales dove 18.4 percent last year. The automaker announced early in 2018 that it planned to cut all car models out of its lineup over the next few years. Ford plans to replace those sedans with consumer-favorite crossovers, a segment in which Ford is weak.

the biggest and most comfortable private vehicles they can afford.
