Charlie Cook: It is very clear, listening to Trump as well as to GOP strategists, that they are building up democratic socialism as the straw man to knock down in this campaign. Their goal obviously is to make electing a Democratic president an unacceptable alternative to Trump. So it basically comes down to whether Democrats want this election to be about Trump or about embarking on a new and different philosophical direction. One of those paths seems to be very risky.

(22,976 posts)I wish EVERY Democrat/progressive would riff on this: Americans, many of the things you LOVE about your country are (gasp!) socialist in nature: Social Security, Medicare, group insurance, credit unions, buyers clubs, homeowners associations, etc., etc.

(18,130 posts)I think a Democrat will probably win the presidency next year, but it's not for certain and it's not by as much as we should win by. We should be winning by about 75-25%

(51,632 posts)that is affordable as well as other Dem issues such as living wages, fair taxes, equal rights for all and Climate Change. Tackling tRump wad also important to voters. If we use the same tactics we did to GOTV in the midterms we have a damn good chance.

One bit of advice I've seen, and I'm still digesting it, is to give Trump as little oxygen as possible. We all know that he loves to frame things to his advantage, even when it's an out-and-out easily demonstrable lie. For some reason, the media continue to grant him unearned credibility on so many subjects, subjects he's shown quite clearly he doesn't understand or that he's gotten 100% wrong (e.g., tax cuts will pay for themselves). When Trump pops off in his signature uninformed manner, and some reporter wants a quote from a Democrat, how will it play to say simply: "Trump doesn't know what he's talking about" or "That's completely wrong." And then, a very radical notion, STOP TALKING. Just dismiss Trump's nonsense as nonsense.
I'm not sure if it would work, but rather than arguing with some hare-brained Trump word salad (and the inevitable "What he really meant" commentary from media personalities), just dismiss it out of hand as so misguided it would have to improve 25% to be catastrophically wrong.
