That's all I cared about. BTW, she has non-life-threatening injuries.

Can you give us confirmation that nothing is going to be done to the cat? I'm not doing anything tomorrow, and wouldn't mind rioting if they try and put the cat down. Lol

We can promise you nothing will happen to our jaguar. Shes a wild animal and there were proper barriers in place to keep our guests safe- not a wild animals fault when barriers are crossed. Still sending prayers to her and her family.
CAUTION: Icky wound shown.

(86,843 posts)I would do it that way too. Anyone arrogant enough to think that their idea was a good one and that they were so special that there would be no consequences deserves to wait until the filming was done. I have no compassion for wannabe Darwin Award nominees.

Sometimes they do things and get hurt.
You have no compassion for such people?

(86,843 posts)Was there nobody there to keep this person with suspect rationale from doing this stupid thing?
I worked in National Parks for years and I have seen too many ARROGANT assholes jump fences, try to pet grizzly bears, take selfies with bison and hop the fence protecting them from falling into an abyss, all because they were too special to obey the rules. There was a BARRIER and she ignored it, sorry, don't feel her pain nor will I ever feel any compassion for her. Besides, the taxpayers will foot her medical bills.
We don't seem to be agreeing on anything today...

Exactly. I was told to fuck off so many times for trying to do my job and protect idiots from themselves that I got out of the public service end of it.

(23,374 posts)If the zoo has no signage warning patrons to not climb into enclosures to take selfies with wild animals, then they might be negligent.
Some lawyer will make that claim.

(23,374 posts)In Yellowstone Nat'l Park, they warn us not to take selfies with bison. In Shenandoah Nat'l Park, they warn us not to take selfies with bears.
I suppose those signs are there because of something that occurred.

(5,815 posts)that we have as House cats/pets. They can seem really docile or laid back until you hear them roar or tear into a piece of raw beef thrown into their cage for feeding time. The level of stupidity or naïveté to think you can climb a barricade into a jaguar cage to take a quick selfie is pretty breath taking. It happens with enough regularity that it gives one pause to think they walk among us. 👀 😱 😵
And lest anyone think I have no compassion, that would be wrong. We need to have an alarm system or something to prevent these things from happening to those who lack the capacity to know it is a very bad idea.

(17,608 posts)trying to take selfies with bison or worse, think they will get a little closer to the hot springs than the marked path:
https://www.yellowstonepark.com/things-to-do/cautionary-tale
TBH though, I can see someone not realizing how dangerous the hot springs are. A big cat? Just do the math on the size of the claws relative to little Miss Kitty at home. (I had an older female house cat whose claws were no fun to encounter when she was pissed. Wouldn't want to meet same on an animal what, 10 - 20 times bigger? My cat was no slouch when she wanted to bite, too.)

(5,815 posts)warning visitors all about all kinds of wonderful but potentially dangerous things and creatures. Hot springs, mud pots, geysers, bison, coyotes, etc. Even with the carefully made boardwalks people are tempted to get out and walk on the crust not having a clue if it was thin or covering a pool of hot water. Do they not know how to read or just think they dont mean it when they say something is dangerous?
One night we walked across the road to watch the gorgeous sunset on the mountains. We heard a clip clop of hooves coming down the road and saw several bison headed our way so we quickly made our crossing and got a lot of distance between us and the bison. They were the size of a Volkswagen. Several other tourists edged closer and closer to them to get better pictures. I just held my breath and luckily they passed on by with out hurting anyone. The next morning the bison were right outside our cabin, calmly eating grass under the light snowfall. We waited for them to mosey on before we left our cabin.
Tourists can be dumb as rocks. And sadly, many will pay for their foolishness with their lives.

(26,404 posts)The stupid walk amongst us all the time.
I have chatted with several Big Cat handlers (zoos/sanctuary) and they have all told me Jaguars are the breed they watch the most when handling and trust the least while in their presence. They are far too much of an opportunistic hunter and will quickly attack with little to no warning. And their attack is very vicious, powerful and effective.
This lady is damned lucky her stupidity didn't cost her life.

(17,608 posts)Saw the report earlier and it didn't sound 100% certain.
The reply from the zoo there sounds pretty certain though.
I hope the woman is okay. I sure wish people would learn whatever they need to learn, BEFORE they do really stupid stuff like she did.

(26,404 posts)I always hate it when people's stupidity cause an otherwise innocent animal to lose their life. I use innocent here because the cat was just acting within the normal realm of behavior - it was not sick or hurt. The zoo also sounded like they had done their work and established appropriate barricades. Now they will have to put more money into idiot-proofing things - money which probably could have been used to expand other programs.

This is why you do not jump barriers where wild animals are housed. It isn't Disneyland.
Also why you stay within barriers/warnings at our National parks, instead of backing onto a ledge for a selfie. Saw this a half-dozen times at the Grand Canyon. Take a fall off the rim? No coming back.
We need to stop the stupid.
