'A bad deal for the American people:' 37 Congress members oppose T-Mobile's Sprint deal
More than three dozen congressional Democrats opposed T-Mobile US Inc.'s $26.5 billion bid to acquire Sprint, arguing the deal would lead to American job losses, increase prices and lower wages.
"This is a bad deal for the American people," states the Feb. 28 letter signed by 37 members of Congress including U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who represents the Washington district that includes Seattle. "The proposed merger would kill American jobs, reduce competition in the already highly concentrated wireless market, and raise prices for consumers."
T-Mobile in a statement to the Puget Sound Business Journal in response to the letter said the merger has a "considerable amount of bipartisan support."
"The New T-Mobile will be a disruptor that aggressively challenges industries that are currently dominated by entrenched wireless and cable companies," the company said. "When you look at the actual facts, data and analysis here, the merger will create jobs from day one, deliver more to customers of all incomes for less, reach rural America like never before, and create a transformational nationwide 5G network that our two companies could not deliver alone.
