Can anyone give me the upside

Of Pelosi making her statement about impeachment? Even if you agree, even if the political calculus is correct... saying what she said seems like a losing proposition all the way around. It is music to Trump supporters’ ears, demoralized a huge chunk of the Dem side of the aisle... they might think it would play well with independents but seems to me it would only reinforce the image that the Dems won’t fight anyway. Regardless of how practical her stance may be... how is this helpful, and not just ensuring the divisions she brings up still happen, but only in our own party?

It probably drove Trump crazy to hear her say he's not worthy of impeachment. athena Mar 2019 #1

Also, it gives moderates the impression that Democrats are reasonable. If and when Pelosi does move to impeach, Democrats will have more credibility than if they had appeared to be salivating at the thought of impeachment.

Although frankly I think the “this will appeal to moderates” is a miscalculation. I don’t know if this would drive Trump crazy or not... but it’s a gift to the GOP and Trump supporters.

Explain how it’s a gift.

I think you’re interpreting her statement to mean she has no plans to impeach. In fact, she merely wants to appear as if she has no plans to impeach. She’s a politician.

You can underestimate her if you like. She’s always been the most underrated politician in US history, and there is a reason for that.

There have to be consequences, or there will be a next Trump. It’s a gift to telegraph that nothing’s gonna come of this. Getting him out in the next election Is. Not. Enough.

Dems are going to have the Watergate style oversight hearings and take Trump apart bit by bit while not having official impeachment hearings that Trump and his cult can spin as overreach and persecution. Dems get all the benefits of exposing every unlawful, humiliating, unethical and vile personal business Trump has done without the spectacle of an impeachment trial in the Senate that will result surely in acquittal. Then imagine Trump in the rose garden announce he's vindicated and untouchable.
Anyway, that's my take. Besides, she left the door wide open for taking action if Republicans will join the Democrats and join them. Those who want to impeach now will have plenty of chances to expose the truth and educate the public to raise awareness and build a coalition that might create pressure to force bipartisan action.

The anti-Trump campaign should be to elect another president next year. The position on impeachment can always change given new circumstances. Otherwise it’s good to put an end to the impeachment question.
