The Utah state legislature has advanced a hate crime bill after Republicans added rightwing conservatives as a protected class under the law. Trump supporters are not historically a victim of hate crimes.
Republicans added political expression as a protected class equal to racial minorities, LGBTQ people, and veterans. Republican Governor Gary Herbert praised the addition, saying it added critical protections for marginalized communities.

State Rep. Karianne Lisonbee, the same anti-LGBTQ state legislator that tanked a proposed law to ban ex-gay conversion therapy in the state earlier this month, was behind the underhanded shenanigans to the hate crimes law. Lisonbee said after she gutted the conversion therapy bill, she was sent angry emails and thats why she was adamant conservatives needed to be protected.
I have had hateful things said about me, she said. I have experienced death threats over the last few days. I have had people tell me, How dare you play the victim card. And I ask you, is not having somebody threaten you making you a victim?

(11,738 posts)It will make other protections irrelevant. If a conservative attacks a Jewish person or Black person, or LGBT person then their defense would be that they are also a protected person and were merely expressing their protected political views. This was done cynically to gut protections for historically oppressed people.

(15,805 posts)Being stupid enough to align themselves with Trump is not the same thing as being gay or black. The state cannot take away the 1st Amendment rights of the entire state to promote one political party.
Republicans are free to support their party, no matter that siding with ignorance, hate, fear and violence makes them pariahs in the common community. Making that choice, however, that does not earn them any special preferences in the political arena. They have to pull up their panties and stand on the merits of their decisions just like the big girls do.
