After two failed attempts, a bill that has the power to extend the protections granted by the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include gender identity and sexual orientation might finally have a chance to become law.

Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) the bill's main sponsor said that “in most states in this country, a gay couple can be married on Saturday, post their wedding photos to Instagram on Sunday, and lose their jobs or get kicked out of their apartments on Monday just because of who they are," NBC News reported. "We are reintroducing the Equality Act in order to fix this.”

In an op-ed co-written by Pelosi and Cicilline for Advocate, the Democrats write that they will not rest until full equality for all Americans is reached.

“Ensuring full civil rights protections for LGBTQ Americans may be inconceivable for some, but it is inevitable to us. Enacting this legislation will shorten the distance between the inevitable and the inconceivable.”
