Should We Allow Republicans to Change the Meaning of the Word "Entitlement?"

No. Instead, ask Republicans if they believe you are truly not entitled to receive the benefits you have been paying for all of your working live and that everyone else who works has been paying for all their lives. Ask them if the law does not entitle you to receive those statutory benefits. Ask them if they intend to take away the benefits to which you are entitled by law. Ask them if the promises made to you by the federal government before making you pay into that system are worthless.

Ask them specifically if they plan to take away your individual benefits under Social Security or Medicare. Put them on camera saying that they plan to take them away from you and everyone else who is entitled to them. Watch them run away from you as fast as they can.

They're trying to redefine a word again, as they have done so many times in the past. We should not let them do that. Instead, say this:

"Yes, I am entitled to those benefits, as is everyone who qualifies for them by paying into Social Security and Medicare throughout their working life. Do you have a problem with that, Sir or Madam? If so, I have a problem with you remaining in office or taking office. Good day to you!"

No, but I think it'd be worth it to use the phrase 'earned benefits' when we talk about them (nt) mr_lebowski Mar 2019 #1

until it was used sarcastically. Once that happened, the word got tainted. That's happened with a number of words over the years.

It wasn't just sarcasm. It was a deliberate action taken to demonize the concept. Republicans have done the same thing with many words, like liberal and freedom. Even the word Democratic was deliberately misused in an attempt to demonize it, as well. Newt Gingrich was a big advocate of changing word meanings and wrote about how to do exactly that with many words.

that there have been deliberate actions to tar Social Security, Medicare, etc. with it. But what got the ball rolling was sarcastic talk about people considering themselves "entitled" to do something that might not be so. It used to be a synonym for "privilege", but now that word has new connotations as well.
