That job didn't exist when I was choosing what to do for a living. Based on the YIs I've seen, it seemed like a poor thing to aspire to. Vis: the movie "Eighth Grade."

(3,276 posts)didn't tell me I needed to become a Brand, either, but apparently that's where we've ended up.

They shill (i.e. promote a product), they get paid. It is kind of like creating websites/web content for products and services you personally don't use, yet you get paid for for said work. Not a lot of difference, really.

(146,317 posts)range of businesses that offer a wide range of products and services. From Scrap metal recyclers, Lawyers and plastic surgeons to heating and air conditioning companies, real estate brokers, and roofing companies. I'm not shilling for their products. Instead, I describe the products and services without any hype so people can decide for themselves whether to patronize that company.
When I needed a new furnace for my house, I purchased it and had it installed by a company whose website I had worked on. They gave me a $300 discount off the $3100 cost for the furnace and installation. In reality, they gave that discount to almost every customer, so it was not really a benefit of writing their website. I got paid for that at my rates. Their products and services were as described on the website. I don't need a plastic surgeon, and already have an attorney. I have turned down many projects because I thought the company was not completely ethical. I have turned down companies because they were scammers. I never accepted any work that involved hype, dishonesty or exaggeration.
Nothing I have written in my entire career has been hype. Nothing. When I reviewed software programs, I tested them thoroughly and reported on my findings. My customers were the readers of the magazines I wrote for, not the software publishers. I was paid by the magazine, not the software companies. My editors expected objective reviews and I gave them exactly that. If I hadn't, I wouldn't have worked in that business.
So, you're way off base with your not so subtle dig at me.

(3,022 posts)is going to be expanding my audience beyond persons sharing my DNA. If I do start to influence fashion get ready for Beyonce and Lady Gaga to be wearing three button pull over shirts and khakis. I think that's how it works anyway.

(3,022 posts)such a formal look, but I really admire someone with the fashion forwardness to pull it off. Mark this day for posterity you and I are probably only 100,000 selfies or so away from being Internet Famous.

(3,105 posts)but taking a new technology and making money off it, is not one of them. I say, good for them. I watch a lot of sewing influencers, and it has been brought youngsters to a embrace a dying craft.

(5,501 posts)If you look at what even the average influencer makes, its not even a livable wage. Thats talking about .001% of YouTube content creators, which might be generous.
The top YouTubers make millions of dollars, sure. However, for every success, there are thousands of channels that never took off, or have at best 10,000 subscribers if theyre extremely lucky. You never hear about them, because most of them are ambitious people presenting to a metaphorical empty theater. Success seems to be some skill and mostly luck.
YouTube is something you do in your spare time. You wont make any money off it. If you do, youre extremely lucky. Almost everybody who doesnt do it for fun gets frustrated and gives up - if you dont create content for the love of it, youll be highly disappointed.
