What the G.O.P. Platform Represents

Published: August 21, 2012 332

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/22/opinion/what-the-gop-platform-represents.html

I won't post the article, interesting as it is, but ....

I have a question. Is all this bullshit about women's reproductive rights, the meaning of rape, amendments banning same-sex marriage, etc. ...... really what the GOP stand for despite what seems overwhelming support for Obama's policies regarding it all? Or, is it all a ruse to take the attention away from what a poor candidate Romney is and his lack of policy towards anything that needs immediate attention, like jobs, the economy, bringing home manufacturing, stopping outsourcing? Are they playing some sort of game using women and gay rights and hiding behind the uproar the most extreme fundie voters will make sure hits the media first? Because I really don't understand how, with women voters being in the majority now, they can expect to win on such a platform?

The flames are dying down...

Then you get a whole mess of sparks and popping noises.

I figure that the Republican zeitgeist knows they are dying away, and it scares the bejeebers out of them. This culture war thing has been going on for at least 50 years. We're winning, and it is driving them nuts with anger, fear, and envy.

ANGER: they've tried tried every trick, and they haven't won any but temporary battles.

FEAR: within 20 years, even places like Texas will be voting blue. The Sanctuary cities (Boston, New York, Boulder, SF, etc) are growing (according to the Brooking Institute) and the red zones are shrinking. *

ENVY: We have more money than most of the red zones. We have more people than most of the red zones. We have more innovation than most of the red zones. We also have more and better parties than most of the red zones.

*Disclosure: I used to live in a rural part of Maryland. After 5.5 years, my wife and I got better jobs in New England. The locals were shocked that we'd consider leaving "God's Country." We had been expected to settle down, start businesses in the area, and then have lots of kids. (I think the last one was to bring up the town's population.)

Good news in a way!, but bad for the people they're trying to hurt and demean along the way.

at least parts of the technology and alternative economy groups are growing.
Internet is effectively impossible to censor.

The whole philosophical edifice of the Republican/Conservative mindset is rapidly eroding.

For the folks in the currently red zones, either get to a Sanctuary, or really get ready to fight.

Either way, we'll win.
