Yashar Ali: Did you go to a community college?

Yashar Ali 🐘 Verified account @yashar

Did you go to a community college? Quote tweet this and say which community college you attended and what you're doing today. I'll retweet as many as I can. People who attend community colleges deserve to be as proud as people who attend Harvard.

Hell, I didn't even take the SAT (it was that bad... lol). I gained confidence/self esteem and excelled. I went on to graduate summa cum laude from my university. Community college was a turning point in my life.

Started at El Camino College, then went to Harbor College before Cypress. We went from an apartment in Torrance to a rental house in San Pedro, then folks bought a place in Cypress; don't know how it is now, but back then you had to attend in the district where you lived. Anyway, I enjoyed my time at Cypress.

I was a miserable student till I went ECC, I hated school but once I started college I loved it and got really good grades. I look back on my time there with real fondness, it was a wonderful learning experience and that love of learning has stayed with me.

it's difficult to get into some classes in the UC and CS system, so a lot of people do two or more years of junior/community college to take care of the basic course requirements, then transfer to a four-year school to complete a BS. It's also cheaper and more flexible for people who don't have the money or are working to support themselves.

I've taken a few JC classes after getting my degrees elsewhere. Continuing education is another function they serve. One of the respondents in the OP mentioned De Anza, a local community college that back in the 1980s had a program specifically aimed at people who wanted to change careers and move into the burgeoning Silicon Valley job market - it was highly regarded.

When people try to denigrate state schools I like to point out that George W. Bush couldn't get into U of Texas because of his grades, but had no problem getting into Harvard as the son of a vice-president and grandson of a senator.

Our symbol was a smudgepot and our mascot was a panther.

Got into politics for the first time working for the Eugene McCarthy campaign. Transferred to a university when I was done.
