While Missouri politicians have long tried to outdo each other over pro-gun legislation, the latest bill may be impossible to top a law mandating that every Missouri resident aged 18 to 35 purchase an AR-15-style rifle.
No, this is not the Onion. And yes, that's the very weapon targeted by gun reform activists and in an ongoing lawsuit filed by families of victims killed in the Sandy Hook massacre.
Introduced last month by state Representative Andrew McDaniel (R-Deering), the bill, titled the "McDaniel Militia Act," would create a state tax credit (capped at $1 million annually) to function as an incentive for residents not yet strapped with Big Government's preferred Big Gun the AR-15. Purchasers could then claim the tax credit on up to 75 percent of the gun's cost.
The bill's text states, "Any person who qualifies as a resident on August 28, 2019, and who does not own an AR-15 shall have one year to purchase an AR-15... Every resident of this state shall own at least one AR-15" [emphasis added].

(25,865 posts)I personally wish others didn't own guns, but I'll be magnanimous and bow to the majority and say that it's okay that others own guns.
Perhaps an important point is, who will pay for my AR-15? What if my income is such that there is zero money left over after all of my expenses? And that's aside from I FUCKING DON'T WANT TO OWN A GUN.
Take a deep breath. I'm okay now.
Actually, I believe this kind of bullshit has been tried before, requiring everyone in a community to own a gun. And it's not enforceable.
I'd far rather all guns were confiscated. I know, I'm being silly, but bear with me for a bit. If no one had a gun, how do you suppose mass shootings would occur? Think about it.
And then remember how guns make us all safer. Especially when toddlers take a gun from mommy's purse and shoot her. Yes, safer. Or when a kid finds dad's gun in his bedside table and shoots his little sister. Yes, they are both safer, aren't they?
I am so fucking sick and tired of the excuses for gun ownership in this country that I am incoherent on this topic. Let's just take away all the guns and give it, I don't know, six months, and see what it's like. If gun deaths continue at the same rate they had before the gun takeaway, then obviously I'm an idiot and I don't know what I'm talking about. But if say, for instance, it works out as it did in Australia, and no more mass shootings occur, well then, what might we conclude? That guns make us safer? How about no guns make us a fuck of a lot safer?

(885 posts)I merely planned for media to write about it but would ultimately amend it to take out the mandates and requirements (age and type of gun) and turn it into a gun tax credit bill, McDaniel told Splinter in an email.
Essentially, McDaniel just wanted the press to give his insane-sounding legislation a signal boost so his slightly less insane proposalthe tax creditsgets some free press. Missouri, by the way, boasts the seventh-highest rate of gun violence in the country, which costs residents an estimated $1.9 billion dollars each year. Nevertheless, McDaniel has decided his time as an elected official is best spent trolling the people in his state.

Now tell my why it's different when they say it's just peachy if the government wants to force people to buy a lethal weapon intended to kill people and associated with the worst mass murders in American history.

(19,257 posts)And using a gun to shoot someone is an illegal act. Similar to how your car insurance won't pay a survivor you intentionally ran over, or your homeowners insurance won't pay to rebuild your house if you intentionally torched it.

(19,257 posts)Your dog bites the neighbor's kid while walking, you're probably covered. You intentionally sicc (sp?) your dog on the kid to maul him, you're probably not covered.
There are insurance policies to cover accidental gunshot injuries, but they're mostly sold by the NRA, and they are very profitable for them.
