Reddit Has Banned Two Channels Showing Human Death.

Reddit is one sick company.

On Thursday night, a Reddit spokesperson told BuzzFeed News that /r/watchpeopledie, where links led to videos of people being executed or hit by cars, was allowed on the site because it provided a service to members — some of whom the company said were medical professionals or first responders — to learn about or cope with death. By Friday morning, however, Reddit moved to end /r/watchpeopledie, which had more than 300,000 subscribers, and /r/gore, as a result of members continually linking to videos of the New Zealand incident while moderators failed to act or even encouraged their posting.

This is a snuff film and terrorist propaganda, if ISIS did this, anyone who sent this video out would be treated like a terrorist.

2. I never understood why otherwise "normal" people went to Reddit. It has always trafficked in some

of the most hateful misogynistic and racist discourse. Threatening discourse...doxxing those individuals with whom the swarm holds in disdain.

This is not "FREE SPEACH". It is enabling of HATE SPEECH and VIOLENCE incitement, IMO.

5. I use Reddit to watch certain football games

as I don't own a regular TV.

Anything else on that site is a completely unknown to me. The person who turned me on to watching the football games there encouraged me to explore the rest of it, but I honestly couldn't quite figure it out and couldn't be bothered to learn, as I seemed to find everything else I wanted elsewhere on the internet.

is good for niche interests, and I have plenty. All that other stuff you mentioned? I don't see it, and don't seek it out. I get my real news from WAPO, MSNBC, and DU.

8. I'm sure that's true. Unfortunately, the useful/legit stuff provides "cover" for the seamier side.

Some forum owners don't believe they are responsible for policing their sites...

It’s easy to avoid the assholes. I go there to discuss games, authors, history, hobbies, and Formula1. There are toxic subreddits, but normal people don’t go there.

Some of the discussions during football season are EPIC.

Formula1, Le Mans, 40k, Star Wars, Star Trek, Science and other reddits can be super interesting. I have seen some truly amazing photos in photography subreddits. More than a few photos have made their way into my wallpaper / background settings.

Just because there are a handful of douchebags doesn't mean the entire platform is useless or racist.

The social news site Reddit has occasionally been the topic of controversy due to the presence of communities on the site (known as "subreddits&quot devoted to explicit or controversial material. Yishan Wong, the site's former CEO, stated, "We stand for free speech. This means we are not going to ban distasteful subreddits. We will not ban legal content even if we find it odious or if we personally condemn it."[1]

The subreddit /r/jailbait, devoted to suggestive or revealing photos of underage girls, was one of the most prominent subreddits on the site before it was closed down in October 2011 following a report by CNN.[2] The controversy surrounding /r/Creepshots, devoted to revealing or suggestive photos of women taken without their awareness or consent, occurred a year after /r/jailbait's closure. The /r/Creepshots controversy prompted a Gawker exposé of one of the subreddit's moderators by Adrian Chen, which revealed the real-life identity of the user behind the account, Michael Brutsch. This started discussion in the media about the ethics of anonymity and outing on the Internet.[3]

While Reddit has proved itself as a great source of viral news and received deserved praise for its coverage of the Aurora shootings, a recent thread posited a question about where women fit in in the site.

It's all about what you look for and what subreddits you follow. I've never even inadvertently stumbled onto something I didn't want to see.

I follow subreddits about cute dogs and cute animals, about history, about colorizing photographs, about the London Underground, about science, about politics, about decluttering, about happy cows, and dozens more. There are tons of subreddits where people write about their problems and get support and advice. Overall, on the subreddits I follow, 95% of people are nice.

I love Reddit. Have I just been ridiculously lucky?

So the psychotic hate will continue to fester, even though there are incidents traceable to that toxic subreddit.
