Robert Reich: Trump is cornered, with violence on his mind. We must be on red alert

What does a megalomaniacal president of the United States do when he’s cornered? We’ll soon find out.

House Democrats are beginning a series of investigations and hearings about Donald Trump. Senate Republicans have begun to desert him. Twelve defected on the wall. Seven refused to back Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen.

Almost all have gone on record that they want Robert Mueller’s report made public. That report, not incidentally, appears imminent.

Trump cannot abide losing. His ego can’t contain humiliation. He is incapable of shame.

So what does a cornered Trump do? For starters, he raises the specter of violence against his political opponents.
-----------
Throughout his campaign and presidency, Trump has given cover to some of the most vile bigots in America. As he grows more desperate, he is giving them encouragement.

It is our job – and the job of all senators and representatives in Congress, regardless of party, and of military leaders – to condemn hatred and violence in all its forms, even when the president of the United States makes excuses for it.

And it is up to all of us to reaffirm our commitment to democracy, even when the president of the United States threatens to unleash the military and vigilantes against it.

In the fall of 2018 Trump went to Lebanon, OH and spoke about good old
Gen. Bobby Lee of the treasonous Confederate States of America. That was
no accident because that area is the home to the Klan in OH and 2 of the
people who turned violent @ the Charlottesville, VA white nationalist rally
were from that area.

@ my late father's services about 1 month ago a nationally know political
scientist and an old friend of the family said that when the Mueller report
comes out Trump will see a drop in his support but in America we have
something like 25% of America who are racist, sexist, and or right wing
extremist Christians and they will almost never leave Trump and Trump
calls out to them every time he does his White Power gang sign.

Mostly I refuse to get sucked into outrage and tongue-clicking tsk-tsks about whatever is the daily Trump outrage. And it is daily that he says or performs some shit. The best thing for me to do is to focus on electing Dems in 2020. That is the most productive use of my political time.

Trump will not last forever. He WILL reap what he has sown. He WILL face justice, or he will simply die and go to Hell.

The only way he will reap what he has sown and face justice is if we MAKE it happen. Karma may be a thing but it works way too slowly in tRump's case.

and those yammering for insurrection are no more capable of waking up than Trump at this point. But imo, the senate is democracy's current weak point, where it will hold or break. Then the courts.

a military putsch, either to keep Trump in power or remove him. And it doesn't really seem serious. The senate and then possibly SCOTUS are where democracy is fragile, and I think his message is mostly about the senate here.

Absent military intervention, Trump's just broadcasting increasingly desperate wishes. More of his cluelessness. By far most of those yammering about uprising are no more likely to grab a gun or golf club to take over the nearest federal building than he is. They're also not going to "wake up," but, like radicals and reactionaries in general, they're far more of a minority than their own noise allows them to realize.

But maybe it's time to write our senators again.

to wear to the grocery store and go about our business in our neighborhoods, in safety. They don't have to say "MAGA." A red cap will confuse them.

Maybe just put the cap on our dash, when we're in the store, so our cars don't get keyed or tires slashed.

I live in Trumper Territory. I will not put a Democratic Party sticker on my car. I guess I'm part of the underground resistance, now.

Cornered animals are dangerous. We need to be vigilant and not brush off his calls to violence or actual violence from Trump or his minions. Can you imagine what Republicans would have done if Obama said anything similar (not that he ever would have)?

He's been cornered qiite a few times. The difference to adjust would be that he has more power now, so I'd imagine it would magnify it a bit. But I think his basic reaction would be the same.

I don't know the answer to my own question.

But bankruptcy is psychologically like dismissing his resposibility without regard for other entities. Getting money from the Russians is like circumventing his losses by getting support through any means, even illegal means, even if it indebts him politically and financially. We probably already knew that but it kind of solidifies how we think about his basic instincts.

I think he's in his own personal Alamo last stand because what does he have left if he does leave? I believe very firmly that he's installed himself for life. And yesterday's veto is proof that he believes he is above the law and is America's first king of his own making. We need to be praying for a widowmaker event.

... because he's the "pResident".

Yes, he's gotten away with all kinds of things - but he never had to deal with at least 17 ongoing investigations of his business dealings and his conduct while in office, with undoubtedly more to come.

He's never been held accountable in any serious way, or in a way that couldn't be disappeared with enough money and a good lawyer.

I take joy in knowing that Spanky - for all his arrogant bloviating - must regret ever having been elected every single second of his currently miserable life. He probably dreams about the days he could golf whenever he wanted, cheat on his taxes, use his "charitable foundation" as his personal piggy-bank, and grab pussies with abandon.

Now he's chin-deep in shit that isn't going to go away.
