I was once advised that a good salesman doesn't sell "the product", he sells himself. That made an impression on me because I realized he was right. The product is secondary.
If a politician is a good salesman, he doesn't need issues. All he needs is his sales pitch. And it doesn't really matter what he is selling. A good salesman connects with people.
We have a salesman in the White House. He is many things but above all else, he is a salesman.

(82,383 posts)people go on about "blaming voters" but when it comes down to it, they know how to sell what people are buying.

(82,383 posts)If it is bad, how do we get genuine people into offices? And how do we complain about the money they have to raise to get the platform to sell themselves?
I used to be told that about trial lawyers - if the jury likes you, and so on, but that's not justice. Is life one big popularity contest with no substance?

I watched too many greedy Trump wantabes. Often wondered how they lived with themselves.
Most were Republicans,too. I had a chance to watch the Bush goad handers lose their butts during his Recession. Panicked, lost.I hung on until Obama came in,watched it soar.
