Allow Americans to have as many single shot guns as they want. All the hunting rifles they want.

But no semiautomatic weapons.

That’s the ban we need. Ban semiautos.
(You could ban handguns too, as Canada does. But banning semiautos would get you most of the way there. Letting people have revolvers isn’t a big deal. )

... I think Liz Warren has the best plan for making corporations and billionaires less politically influential. Which would solve this problem and a lot of others.

That’s why I’m for her.

This is a public health emergency, a law enforcement nightmare, one of the few industries so unregulated they are not held responsible for the harm their products cause. Not acceptable.

Time to get these weapons out of the nutcases' hands.

...someone with a semi-automatic 7.62 weapon can absolutely obliterate dozens of people.

For years and years gun fanatics tried to make a distinction between "machine guns" and "semi-automatics."

The guy in Nevada proved that you could inflict mass damage without having a "machine gun."

They immediately banned bump stocks due to his actions.

We're going to have a reckoning eventually. Either make every public venue fully staffed with armed hired hands, or get rid of weapons of mass casualty infliction.

Sadly there's almost certainly another psycho out there right now planning something like this. And what makes it all the more disturbing is that a lot of these dudes are starting to let themselves be taken alive.

We are long overdue for another assault weapons ban, one that is permanent this time. At some point, reasonable people need to demand the carnage stop.

New Zeland government procedures. Does a minister proclaiming something make it a law?
Or is the action within the minister's power to implement such a ban?

The real challenge is getting them out of circulation

Mandatory turn in will have low compliance. Threatening with felony charges doesn't work, the post Sandy Hook laws in NY and CT had less than 25% register.

Australia paid market value and still is thought to have had less than 50% turned in

To get most of the guns, you have to make the gunners want to turn them in. This means paying way above what the gunners paid for them. Make it the biggest financial windfall of their life and they'll whine, turn them in, and buy a new pickup truck with the money.

As they emanate out their 'thoughts and prayers' into the universe, which SO obviously manifest themselves in concrete and verifiable results.

I mean, pfffft ... they COULD make it all magically go away, if Libtards would quit interfering with the whole process!

being invaded on the southern border by "rapists, murderers, thugs". No mention of the invasion of human traffickers flying in, or sailing in. Some people believe anything the orange ass says. THAT is the problem with the US, too many dumb people who can not, or will not THINK for themselves. Maybe if the US had not invaded every other country, then people would live peacefully in their own countries? Until a nut with an automatic rifle manages to get into the House or the Senate, and shoot a few of our "leaders" NOTHING will be done. As long as they are safe, to HELL with the rest of us.

or their "well regulated militia".

So obviously, the next step for New Zealand is fascist oppression from their government, like American wingnuts keep warning about. And they'll have no guns to defend themselves from Jacinda Ardern's goons coming to F them up.

This brenton tarrant - would be what our gun junkies here would refer to as "a law-abiding citizen" - just before he murdered 49 helpless people in cold blood.

They're all "law-abiding citizens" until the moment when they aren't. And they are all armed at that point because they were "law-abiding citizens".

It's a deadly catch 22.

No one is a law-abiding citizen. No one needs these weapons. These textualists who insist the Constitution must be interpreted in a strict constructionist sense, like the better dead antonin scalia for example, somehow miss the fact that when it was written, the Constitution's reference to keeping "arms" referred to single load muskets.

According to the strict constructionists, that's the only weapon the gun junkies should be permitted to own.
