The University of Michigan has just sent an emergency alert to "run hide fight" at Mason Hall on its Ann Arbor campus.

A university spokesman said he had no details but they are looking into the situation.

A person answering the phone at campus police said the building was being searched.

The simpler the direction, the more likely it is to be both remembered and followed in extremis.

A good friend of mine, who had been in Vietnam, once told me: 'no matter where it is, whenever you walk into a public building the first thing you should do is appraise yourself of the nearest exits'.

And thanks to the home-grown terrorist outfit that is the NRA (and their political wing, the GOPee), he was right.

people are tired of this. If I was going to die like this, I'd go down fighting. Maybe shoot him/her w his own gun after I wrenched it from hateful hands.

Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate. When I was working with Ohio State we went through it twice. It was excellent. At least makes you feel you have a chance to survive.

Please understand that if you've never heard that terminology, it just sounds a little trite in these circumstances.

you can't, then the next best is to hide. For example, I have an oddly shaped office that has the advantage of a small space that can't be seen from the translucent glass on the door. If I hear commotion in the hall, I likely can't get out through my door to exit safely, so I am to hide in the small space and may be able to make a cellphone call for help from there.

If you don't have the option of running or hiding, then you may have to fight (confront the shooter) to have any chance.

By the time the cops get there, it's usually over. Run, hide, fight is what can increase the number of survivors.

active shooter situation. It is just shortened. First a person should run away from the shooter if that can be done safely. If a person can't safely run away, then the person should try to hide, anywhere. Lastly, if a person can't run or hide the person must fight for his or her life and attack the shooter, there are methods that a person uses to hide based upon analysis of how a person (a shooter) entering an area acts, there are some locations from where a person fighting for his or her life have a greater chance of surviving that if the person chooses other locations.

You should study the philosophy and procedures, they may save your life one day.

I will admit that I personally know as close to nothing about guns as is possible in this day and age, but I rather suspect even I could tell the difference between gunshots and balloons popping.

Or do gunshots really sound like balloons popping? I've popped many a balloon in my day, never been around guns, but nothing I've ever heard on TV or in a movie ever sounded like a balloon.

Or overmuch anxiety.

Can't be too cautious. Well, yes, you can be. Too many false alarms = inaction when necessary. Active shooters are very, very rare.

that some popping balloons now comes with the assumption that someone has opened fire and it is time to run for our lives.

So sad...... what we have become... at the hands of the NRA and GOP
