I was wondering who the GOP operative was?
NPR Reporter: Why do you think the President has this lingering contempt for John McCain?
Republican Operative: I have no idea. I'm not a child psychologist.

(58,743 posts)but mostly, I think it is just simple envy. Trump knows he will never get the true respect that John McCain earned as a POW.
That's why he makes fun of McCain.

(6,110 posts)Trump was jealous of McCain for his national hero status, and McCain was jealous of Trump because he succeeded in becoming president where McCain failed.
Both these individuals are/were interensely egotistical.

(297,803 posts)Yeah, I guess Donnie Two-Scoops has got a bug up his ass because nobody lavished him with praise for allowing Senator McCain a funeral, instead of mounting his head (or, more likely, that verdammte THUMB) on a pike on the White House lawn, like he really wanted to. Is there a Nobel Prize for Not Interrupting a Man's Memorial Service with an Air Horn?
Oh, and he's going around telling everybody that McCain pinky-swore to curb-stomp Obamacare and then piss on its corpse, only to betray his poor President at the very last minute, siding with all those sick plebs and their pre-existing conditions, the bastard.
And just like every other Trumpal assault on basic human decency, the GOP response is thank you sir, may we have another? Lindsey Graham pathetically mews I sure would like it if you'd stop dishonoring my dead friend's memory, but if you don't want to, I guess that's ok, too. Flubber-kneed cowards from Mitt Romney to Martha McSally offered up statements I can't even label milquetoast for fear of slandering both milk and toast. Johnny Isakson was so indignant, he kinda almost raised his voice a little bit, and Republicans are hailing it like the St. Crispin's Day speech. How any of these sycophants can make eye contact with their reflections is beyond me.

(6,110 posts)Both have/had towering ego's
Both had multiple marriages.
Both cheated on their wives.
Trump drew first blood when he said soldiers who get shot down and captured are no national heroes. At the time he said that, he may have known that McCain was behind giving the Trump dossier to FBI. McCain obviously did not want Trump to succeed where he failed (getting elected president).
Then McCain continued the war by casting the deciding vote to keep Obamacare alive.
Sorry, I have no respect for either one of these cheating, egotistical, selfish, narcissistic, attention hungry, pompous individuals who don't give a rats ass for the common hardworking people.

(34,139 posts)Even though McCain did not win his presidential race, McCain is still far more respected than Trump ever will be - and that drives Trump nuts.
He just does not understand what it takes to be respected. He thinks the notoriety he (Trump) has gained should be the equivalent of respect.
Haggis for Breakfast
(6,831 posts)a red, white and blue, true hero military funeral with full honors - something that trmp will NEVER EVER have.
magicarpet
(14,187 posts).... trDump will never earn respect from other people. So he tears down and smears others hoping he can drag them down to his level and then push them a few notches behind trDump.
What better person for a bully to victimize than a man who has been dead for over six months. A dead man can no longer protect himself and strike back. An ideal victim for the coward bully trDump, he can trash and smear McCain,.. McCain can neither defend himself or fight back.
This makes the Fascist coward bully trDump feel almighty and powerful and enhances his despot persona,.. trDump wrestled a war hero and trDump pinned the war hero to the ground.

(9,090 posts)mccain hated him for the ignorant lying shit he is and getting out of vietnam like trump did and what he did to the gop
trump is limbaugh's greatest 'achievement' with help from putin and he's trump's most important ally
and any significant gop figure siding with mccain would get some limbaugh attacks, maybe enough for a death threat or two

(1,822 posts)Has more empathy then Trump.
He laughs and smiles and says please and thank you. He is kind. And he only throws tantrums when he is exhausted.
And they do not happen every day.
Just think about what I just wrote. The POTUS does /has none of the above.

(56,829 posts)the late Charles Krauthammer, an original "Never Trump" Republican and a Harvard educated psychologist:
This is beyond narcissism. I used to think Trump was an 11-year-old, an undeveloped schoolyard bully. I was off by about 10 years. His needs are more primitive, an infantile hunger for approval and praise, a craving that can never be satisfied. He lives in a cocoon of solipsism where the world outside himself has value indeed exists only insofar as it sustains and inflates him.

(267 posts)This is typical Republican behavior. They are never for anything, so much as they are against it's opposite. Even when they propose to build something new, the focus is always on what needs to torn down first to make room. Every issue is approached from some version of a negative viewpoint. Praise is reserved for another person's destructive qualities, or their ability to oppress others and enforce their will. McCain is on his mind, and he doesn't see anything that he esteems.

(24,334 posts)is that we had the courtesy to allow them to make 100+ amendments to it. That and the damage they've managed to do to it since it passed.
