Rising Country Music Star Justin Carter Killed In Gun Accident At 35 (on set of music video)

Rising Country Music Star Justin Carter Killed In Gun Accident At 35
He had the potential “to be the next Garth Brooks” his manager said.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/justin-carter-dead-35_n_5c94a66fe4b057f733095880

A country singer on the brink of stardom was killed in an apparent accident involving a gun on the set of a music video, according to reports.

Justin Carter, a 35-year-old father of two young daughters, had just released a new single, “Love Affair,” and was about to embark on tour when he was fatally shot by a gun that was to have been used as a prop in Houston on March 16, ABC 13 reported.

Carter’s Instagram announced his death, noting that he was always “fully of joy, laughter” and “appreciated all his fans.”

Carter’s mother, Cindy McClellan told to Fox News a gun in his pocket “went off and caught my son in the corner of his eye.”

A bit more at the link. I'll simply say that guns are so entrenched within a lot of "country music" culture that one might wonder if this will be discounted like all the other tragedies.. (Yes, I know the answer)

We were just talking about this yesterday in light of the pellet gun shootings of the teachers. Brandon Lee, prop guns, the importance of treating every gun like it's real and loaded whether you think it's a prop or not.

Mama said the pistol is the devils right hand....

RIP Justin

Blanks still contain explosive material.

This should not have happened. At the minimum the safety should have been employed. Guns should never be treated casually

But this was a prop gun with blanks, not a real gun.

It's likely imo, that it's not built with the same quality & safety in the mechanism

Seems like about every 20 years Hollywood forgets that blanks can and do kill.

If those prop guns fire blanks.

Blanks discharge a wad of paper...not a lead bullet. But at close range or point blank that wad of paper will penetrate the body just as easily as lead.

Hollywood learns this lesson about once every 10 years. This is at least the 3rd time I've heard of someone being killed onset by a blank or prop.

And rely only on blanks to be used. That is why propmasters are supposed to keep close control on the guns and ammo being used while filming. That is why mistakes can cost lives. Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee's son was killed on set by just that sort of mistakes.

"On Friday, October 12, 1984, the cast and crew of Cover Up were filming the seventh episode of the series "Golden Opportunity" on Stage 17 of the 20th Century Fox lot. One of the scenes filmed that day called for Hexum's character to load bullets into a .44 Magnum handgun, so he was provided with a functional gun and blanks. When the scene did not play as the director wanted it to in the master shot, there was a delay in filming. Hexum became restless and impatient during the delay and began playing around to lighten the mood. He had unloaded all but one (blank) round, spun it, and—simulating Russian roulette with what he thought was a harmless weapon—he put the revolver to his right temple and pulled the trigger."

Was it a prop gun, i.e. a fake, or a real gun being used as a prop? Both are dangerous but it is an important distinction.

Also, what contortions would a person have to be in where a gun in a person's pocket would be pointed at the same person's eye?

Or where was the good guy with the gun?

Knowing that people have been killed by guns that supposedly are firing blanks, whatever that means, you'd think someone would have long ago invented a prop gun that was truly not deadly or even dangerous.

On the other hand, keep in mind that guns are intended to wound and kill, so the gun in question performed exactly as it was designed.

Carter appears to have planned to use his own gun in the video. He put it in his pocket at home. It fired and shot him through the eye into the brain.

From this, I have a recommendation: if you want to own a handgun, buy a holster at the same time and always carry your gun in it. He’d still be alive if his gun had been holstered.
