snip--"On the day a gunman opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Sydney Aiello escaped with her life. However, the grief of losing 17 of her classmates and teachers, as well as the long-lasting effects of enduring such a traumatic event, weighed heavily on her. And this weekend, at the age of 19, Aiello took her own life."
snip--"While the nation's attention turned to budding young activists like David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez, however, other Parkland survivors were suffering in silence. And the Aiello family's tragedy is an all too painful reminder that trauma effects teens deeply, often quietly, and for years."
snip--"Sydney's mother, Cara Aiello, told CBS Miami that her daughter struggled with survivor's guilt and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in the year following the tragedy. And while she reportedly never asked for help, she struggled to attend college classes because she was scared of being in a classroom."
snip--There is now a GoFundMe page to help Sydney Aiello's parents and brother pay for her memorial services. "

Collimator
(1,639 posts)This is a vague memory, but I seem to recall a story about the mother of one of the Columbine victims. She went into a gun store, asked to see a gun, and shot herself to death right there in front of the salesperson.
This is a clear example of the therapists' adage "Depression is often anger turned inwards."
To those who pointed out that the young people who turned to activism seem to be coping better with the trauma they endured, it seems that you may have a point. The mother turned her grief and anger onto herself. She probably wanted the gun store owner to suffer as well, but if she and others were encouraged and supported into taking that anger into the public forum, there would be far fewer "fallout" victims of horrific shootings.
Final note: I don't claim to know what comes next beyond this mortal world, but I do hope that Sydney can find peace and comfort. I especially wish that for her family.

even if it's a no-win case, the discovery phase would be most impressive: I'd bet dollars to donughts that the NRA has the same kind of data regarding guns and mental health, that Exxon had on climate science, and Phillip Morris had regarding cancer.

(9,654 posts)What is wrong with this country? Why in the world are guns more important than our kids? This young woman never should have had to experience what she did, and then to have to live with survivor's guilt, it's too much for these kids.
I can imagine the fear when it happened, the shooting at the school, her parents wondering if she survived. And she did, physically. But what she went through took its toll on her, and sadly this was the only way she could find to get out of the pain.
My heart breaks for her parents and her family. I hope they get all of the support they need to help them through this.

Haggis for Breakfast
(6,831 posts)It is overwhelming. Right now, it is CRUSHING the children of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
As someone who has a personal connection to the Parkland massaacre - my niece attends this school - I can tell you all that this is like we have all been whisked right back to that day. That time. That place. Those anxious hours of not knowing. Before the calls from family can even get through, the police report out and the news carries it all. The oxygen is sucked out of your lungs as your heart stops beating in your chest. You can't breathe. You can't think. You can't feel. You can only freeze in that moment.
For those of us with with child relatives at that school, this was the worst single moment of my life. I live out on West Coast, so the news on the telly got to me first. I tried and tried calling, but couldn't get through. ALL of the lines into south Florida were jammed. I could not reach anyone. I lost my mind, then I lost myself totally, screaming, crying, vomiting.
You cannot know what the past year has done to our family. My niece has been living in Hell. She's only 16.
Now this.
My sister told me at the one year anniversary that she knew that this was going to happen, as the community of Parkland was once again plunged into reliving this horror.
In an hour, we will have a marathon phone conversation.

(23,337 posts)No one should have to go through this trauma. I'm sick about this.
This tragic story makes me wonder how many of these survivors aren't getting the mental health support they need? Good therapy costs thousands and without good insurance in place, it is just plain not affordable for many if not most. There should not have to be a GoFundMe for any of these situations. Good lord, we should be caring for all Americans. I'm sorry we failed you Sydney.

Why can't we fucking do something in this country about the scourge of guns? New Zealand has a major terrorist attack, and boom! Assault weapons are banned. We can't even seem to pass minor regulations of fucking killing machines and the people who would buy them.

(19,204 posts)And that's without the psychological burdens Ms. Aiello carried with her every minute of every day since the Parkland massacre. This is so sad. It's horrible that she couldn't find the help she needed to prevent this tragedy.
I hope her family can somehow deal with their grief over this tragic loss. Maybe they'll have enough money from the GoFundMe page to start a scholarship in her name.
There are no words to express the sadness - and anger - I feel over the entire series of events that precipitated this situation.
