ICE Releases DACA Recipient Detained While Serving As Flight Attendant

A Texas flight attendant and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals recipient was freed from Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody on Friday after being held for weeks for leaving the country as part of her job.

The flight attendant, 28-year-old Selene Saavedra Roman, came to the U.S. from Peru as a toddler. She’s married to a U.S. citizen and is legally allowed to remain in the country and work under the protection of the DACA program. She flew to Mexico and back in February for her job at the behest of Mesa Airlines, her employer of about a month, which assured her that her DACA status would not be a problem upon reentry. Afraid of losing her new job, she decided to trust her supervisors.

But when Saavedra attempted to reenter the U.S. on Feb. 12, authorities detained her. She remained in an ICE facility in Conroe, Texas, without any clear timeline on her case until The Points Guy and a swarm of public figures highlighted her case as a symbol of the Trump administration’s troubling immigration policy.

Authorities granted Saavedra parole to return to her College Station, Texas, home on Friday afternoon, her lawyer and husband announced.

Incompetent
Cruel
Egregious

These people are the border control equivalent of steroid-addled cops who shoot teenagers for breathing while black.

Between police brutality and unnecessary killings and border patrol agents who have been given the right by Trump to stop and hold anyone they want—including some US citizens—democracy is being turned on its head. For people of color and for immigrants, legal or illegal, the US has put up its Jim Crow era “No coloreds allowed” signs. These days, all the political capital seems to be spent on racism and antisemitism and the politics of hate instead of taking action to improve the country.

Meanwhile, the Midwest is inundated with flood waters, aging dams are under threat, and farmers are losing their farms because of Trump’s tariff wars. And more than 80% of Republicans think he is doing a great job and will vote for him again—all because he has attacked immigrants and Muslims and women who want to make their own reproductive choices. Oh, and gave an enormous tax cut to the wealthy that means no money left for infrastructure.

I have given up wondering when Republican voters will wake up to the needs of the country instead of giving in to their need to hate and to have the government force their religion on everyone else. The answer is never. We need to focus on the young people whose hearts and minds have not yet been calcified by hatred and misinformation.

Their incompetence leads to their erroneous detentions

Their malice leads them to pursue their victims EVEN THOUGH they have indications that their victims have perfectly legitimate documents (see about the schoolgirl detained at the Tijuana border crossing for 30 hours).

I think the more cowardly agents go after documented DACA type folks because they're scared to go after the dangerous drug cartel types.

It's why Reagan attacked Grenada instead of Iran, it's why Bush, Sr. attacked Panama and not North Korea.
