I don't think I can recall a member of the military breaking with protocol and not clearing a book with the White House/CIA before publication like this, despite superficial similarities to recent leaks: Pentagon papers was from a report the Rand corporation was in possession of, "Cablegate" leak (i.e. Manning/Assange) was a leak of a database that approximately 3 million Americans or contractors already had access to and the Pentagon's attempt to purchase of the entire print run (in order to destroy it) of "“Operation Dark Heart" appears to have its root in some kind of cock-up in the information vetting process, itself.

So, AFAIK, this is actually a unique situation or at least one which has not happened in quite some time.

If he was "cleared" in some official capacity to pen the book then one of the conditions would certainly be that it be submitted for a scrub of sensitive material. Even stuff most of us would consider totally unimportant, e.g. mentioning offhandedly that the stealth helicopters they were riding in often had operational problems. That sort of thing. Nobody even knew those things existed before one of them broke down.

I imagine there'd be quite a lot to go over.
