On election night of 200, the Bushes used their connections at Fox News to call Florida for W, which led to other networks following suit. Once that framing was set, every action the Gore team did with respect to the vote count was treated as an attempt to overturn the race, as opposed to being a continuation of a race that was still too close to call.
The same thing is happening here. By getting the media to put out definitive statements about Trump being "cleared" anything we do from here on our will be treated as sour grapes.
I don't believe that Congressional Democrats could have done anything to stop this all from happening, but this is clearly a game that Republicans have gotten really good at.
Sigh.

(12,618 posts)Way too many people gave in way too soon on Bush Vs. Gore, including Gore himself. I'll never forget he scene in Michael Moore's Farenheit 9-11 where all the black members of Congress were demanding that action be taken about the illegal voter purging of African Americans in Florida, and they were told to sit down and shut up, by none other than Gore himself.
Don't give up, don't be silent, don't be intimidated, and most of all DON'T QUIT. When you quit, that's when they've really won.
